2 giving is my grandmother vocation ur giving reflects the sum and substance of our lives. It is the example set by our parents and grandparents, and lessons from a teacher, a pastor or a mentor. It embodies experiences over the course of our lifetimes, expressions of our faith, our relationships and our work. It is everything that we ve taken in and it is everything that shapes us. experience hope a door
3 s it any onder iving is You are what you eat. It s one of those throw away phrases that we grew up with that was supposed to tell us something about nutrition. As children, we may have joked about it, but as adults, we discover that all of the choices that we make, make us who we are. It s true with our health and also for our» o personal?
4 » faith, our relationships and our work. Or, put another way, all of our choices eventually catch up with us. So what does this have to do with giving? There are principles for effective philanthropy just as there are guidelines for healthy diets; We abide by the highest standards of ethics and the law; We give in accordance with clear missions and explicit goals; We support organizations that are well managed and open about their finances, to name a few. Think of it as nutritious giving. But in addition to all of the highest principles and best practices, giving is also very personal. And there is lots of room to give according to our preferences, to express our individual values and to live what we believe through our generosity. The 3,500 donors of the Lutheran Community Foundation (LCF) support more than 5,500 charities and causes, and each charity reflects the very personal values and preferences of an LCF donor. And while we provide oversight to ensure that each charity delivers on its mission, each donor determines what to support based upon who they are. We could say: You are what you give! We thank each LCF donor for their personal gift as we also recognize the larger shared community that we are supporting and the lives that we are changing. As it turns out, all of this personal giving is creating effective, positive and lasting change, one, very personal, life at a time. sincerely, reverend john r. sabatelli board chair chris andersen president & executive director
