1 MARKET WATCH Market Performance The Amman Stock Exchange continued its escalation to the top this week with the General Index reaching an unprecedented level in its history of trading, almost touching the 10,000 point barrier, and ending the week at 9, points, up 5.91% compared to last week s closing, and giving a 31.01% year-todate gain. The concentrated trading and strong demand on strategic stocks were the main drivers behind the soaring Index, particularly in terms of the Jordan Phosphate Mines and Arab Potash Company, whose prices rose by 25.6% and 16.9% respectively compared to last week. Our top decliner for the week was General Investments which was suspended from trading in November 2006 and was relisted on Wednesday of last week at a floating price. However, trading on its stock did not commence till this week, and its ended the week at a price of JD 3.30, down 46% compared to its last closing price of JD 6.06 back in The surge in stock prices pulled up the market capitalization to JD billion, and the market to times. Moreover, the flourishing market was mirrored in the performance of the majority of stocks, with prices of 124 stocks rising versus 62 declining out a total of 198 companies traded. Sector Performance Trading activity was also buoyant, with the average daily volume traded reaching million shares compared to million shares last week. The average daily value traded registered at JD million, 30.52% higher than last week, with the Jordan Phosphate Mines re-entering our list in top position as the most active stock in value of shares traded. The Services Sector captured 47.72% of the total trading value, in addition to claiming the lion s share of volume traded, which reached million shares. The Industrial Sector and the Banking Sector followed with total volume traded of million shares and million shares respectively. In terms of sector indices, the Industrial Sector was the forerunner, with a 15.52% increase, attributed to the 14.7% rise in the Mining and Extraction Industries Sector Index. The Services and Banking Sectors also registered positive changes, climbing by 2.14% and 0.64% respectively, while the Insurance Sector Index dropped by 0.13% compared to last week s closing. 2 total of 39 executed over the stocks of 16 companies, with a total of million shares traded at a value of JD million. The largest block deal was for the Arab Orient Insurance (AALI), with 2.13 million shares traded for JD 7.16 million. In terms of number of block deals, Darwish Al Khalili and Sons Co. (DKHS) claimed the lion s share with 13 deals, with a total of 2.71 million shares traded for JD 5.24 million. Portfolio Management and Investment Services for Clients (AMWL) and United Financial Investments (UCFI) each had 4 deals executed for a total value of JD 6.19 million and JD 900 thousand respectively, while the Investors and Eastern Arab for Real Estate and Investment had one block deal, with 1.4 million shares traded at a price of JD 3.55 per share. CORPORATE NEWS Taameer Jordan Holding (TAMR) and Teraz Contracting Company, the execution arm of Taameer Jordan Holding Company, signed an agreement for the latter to implement and execute the construction and infrastructure operations for the 48 buildings and 768 apartments of the first phase of Ahl Al Azim Residential City Project within 450 days. Taameer Jordan Holding (TAMR) signed an agreement with the Aqaba Development Corporation to establish a JD 1.5 billion project in Aqaba under the name «Mansion Hills». The project will be established on an area of three thousand dunums and will include residential villas and apartments, playgrounds and water parks. New Sector Classification Indices The Investors and Eastern Arab for Industrial and Real Estate Investment (IEAI) and Taameer Jordan Holdings (TAMR) signed a USD 1 billion agreement to develop the Al Mushatta Industrial City. The Middle East Complex for Electronics, Engineering and Heavy Industries (MECE) announced the establishment of the National Industrial Complex in the Al-Muqar area with a paid-up capital of USD 200 million, representing a Jordanian -Emirati partnership. MECE will have a 70% ownership in the newly established company while the Emirati Company will own 30%. The Board of Commissioners and the Jordan Security Commission announced: The registration of the 1.8 million shares of additional capital of Emmar Investment and Real Estate Development (EMAR) through the capitalization of JD 1.8 million from retained earnings, to be distributed as stock dividends to shareholders. The registration of the 2.5 million shares of additional capital of the Jordan Worsted Mills Company (WMBD) through the capitalization of JD 2.5 million from the issuance premium, to be distributed as stock dividends to shareholders. The registration of the 2 million share capital increase of the Islamic Insurance (TIIC) resulting from the 2

3 capitalization of JD 1 million from the issuance premium, JD 540 thousand from the voluntary reserve, and JD 460 million from the retained earnings, to be distributed as stock dividends to shareholders. The registration of the Central Bank of Jordan s JD 103 million treasury bonds, with a maturity date of May 10th The registration of the Central Bank of Jordan s JD 100 million treasury bills, with a maturity date of May 15th The registration of the 50 million shares paid-up capital of the Jordan United Group and the implementation of the issuance prospectus relating to the 12.5 million shares offering to the public for subscription. The registration of the 20 million shares of Ibn al Haitham Hospital following the transformation of the Company s legal description from a limited liability company to a public shareholding company. The registration of the 3,000 bonds issued by the Union Investment and Saving Bank (UBSI), with a par value of JD 10,000 and a total value of JD 30 million. MACROECONOMIC NEWS The volume of investments in companies registered at the Companies Control Department registered a 9% decrease during the first five months of 2008 compared to the same period in 2007, dropping from JD 380 million to JD 345 million. Meanwhile, the number of registered companies increased during the same period by 6%, amounting to 4,132 companies against 4,035 companies last year. According to the Department of Statistics, the Producer Index rose by 27.1% during the first four months of 2008 compared to the same period in This increase was primarily due to a 28.3% increase in the manufacturing industry prices, which have a weighting in the Index of 82.5%, a 23.7% increase in the quarrying industry prices, and a 14.4% increase in the electricity prices. According to statistics issued by the Ministry of Finance, total domestic revenues and foreign grants during the first two months of 2008 reached JD million compared to JD million over the same period in Moreover, total expenditures for the first two months of 2008 reached JD million compared to JD million in The total value of customer deposits at licensed banks rose by 13.4% during the first five months of 2008 to reach JD billion compared to JD billion during the same period in The balance of credit facilities granted by licensed banks reached JD billion during the first four months of 2008, an increase of 7.7% compared to the same period of last year. Total remittances of Jordanians living aboard reached JD 589 million during the first quarter of 2008, an increase if 8.5% compared to the same period in The number of sales transaction in the real estate sector declined by 9% during the first five months of 2008, according to the Department of Land and Surveys, dropping from 69 thousand for the same period of 2007 to 63 thousand transactions. Meanwhile, the value of trading activity increased by 3% over the same period to reach JD 2.47 billion. In terms of foreign investment in the sector, Iraqi nationals claimed top position, with investments amounting to JD million, followed by UAE and Kuwaiti nationals with JD 4.5 billion and JD 3.65 million, respectively. Total exports of the Irbid Municipality declined by 9% in the first five months of 2008 compared to the same period in 2007 to reach USD million. The Greater Amman Municipality announced that it will issue a tender offer in the near future for the operating of in excess 3

4 of 100 public transportation vehicles with advanced operating systems, in order to ensure the provision of effective transport services for its citizens. The Income and Sales Tax Department announced that it has completed the first phase of the distribution of fuel support cheques to beneficiaries, of which a total of 420 thousand were distributed with a combined approximate value of JD 18 million. The Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation signed Country Programme Action Plan (CPAP) agreements with three agencies of the United Nations, UNICEF, UNDP, and UNFPA, for the implementation of the agencies development assistance plans in Jordan for the period His Majesty King Abdullah ordered the execution of a variety of development, health and educational projects in Karak this year, and has allocated an amount of JD 6 million for the execution of part of the projects this year. The Government singed an agreement with the Spanish-Kuwaiti Coalition for the Zarqa-Amman Light Rail Project for a value of JD 236 million. The Coalition will run the railway under a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis for 30 years, and is expected to commence operations in Moreover, the Jordanian Government will contribute an amount of JD 60 million towards infrastructure for the first phase of the project. The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission signed an agreement with Viacloud Jordan granting them an individual license, under which Viacloud will be entitled to offer all general telecommunications services and/or operate telecommunications networks, excluding mobile phone services. Steel prices continue to rise to reach JD 1,045/tonne on Monday, compared to a price of JD 1,020/tonne last week, attributed to the increase in the global prices of steel. 4
