2 1 India Yamaha to partner ACI Motors to sell products Dhaka Tribune India Yamaha Motors Private Ltd has forged an alliance with local ACI Motors Limited to sell and distribute YAMAHA brand motorcycle and its parts in Bangladesh. The ACI Limited announced the tie-up with India Yamaha to sell and distribute Yamaha products across the country, the company said in a filing with the Dhaka Stock Exchange Yesterday. ACI Motors is a subsidiary of ACI Limited that has 66.50% stake in it. The agreement was made on June 5 last between ACI Motors Limited and India Yamaha Motors for an initial term of three years. ACI Motors targets an estimated sale of Tk50.2 crore in 2016, Tk2,44.5 crore in 2017 and Tk340 crore in 2018, said the company. An official of the ACI Company said: This is a stepping stone of our alliance. We are in talks for further collaboration in future. Established in 2007, ACI Motors is now marketing various agricultural machinery. It has own sales and service centre at Gazipur, Barisal, Bogra, Comilla, Sylhet, Jessore, Rangpur and Dinajpur. India Yamaha Motors Private Ltd is 100% subsidiary of Japanese motorcycles manufacturer giant Yamaha Motor Company. It has three manufacturing plants at Surajpur (Uttar Pradesh), Faridabad (Haryana) and Kanchipuram (Tamil Nadu). The infrastructure at these plants supports production of two-wheelers and parts for the domestic as well as overseas markets. Yesterday at DSE, the ACI share prices gained more than 2% to Tk455.7 a share. 2 BEZA signs MoU for China economic zone in Anwara toda Dhaka Tribune Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) is going to sign a deal with China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd (CHEC) today for the development of an exclusive China economic zone at Anwara Upazila in Chittagong. According to Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the Chinese state-owned firm CHEC will be assigned to develop the site for Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone (CEIZ) on a 774-acre land in Anwara. This is also called Anwara-II Economic Zone. Prime Minister s Principal Secretary Md Abul Kalam Azad, China Harbour Engineering Company Vice-President Bai Yinzhan, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Md Siddiqur Rahman and BEZA Executive Chairman Paban Chowdhury will attend the MoU signing ceremony. 3 Of the proposed land for the economic zone, 290 acres of land belong to the government while the rest will be acquired from private land owners through the office of Chittagong Deputy Commissioner. Once established, the zone will accommodate around 400 factories that will attract around US$2 billion Chinese investment within three years. It will also create new jobs for over 1.5lakh people. Earlier on May 30, 2016, Finance Division released over Tk420 crore funds under the revised annual development programme (RADP) of the outgoing fiscal year to establish the economic and industrial zone for the Chinese investors known as Anwara-II Economic Zone. China Harbour Engineering Company Limited was earlier appointed to develop the zone. The proposed site of the zone is 39 kilometres from Chittagong port, 28 kilometres from Chittagong city and 46 kilometres from Shah Amanat International Airport. The BB will also release new banknotes worth around Tk 15,000 crore, starting June 19, to meet the demand for the new notes during the festival of Muslims. A new note of Tk 500 denomination signed by the new governor will also be launched. The banking regulator has also asked the banks to ensure that the ATMs are never out of money and to deploy a security guard for 24 hours in front of every ATM booth, Subhankar Saha, executive director and spokesman of the BB, told The Daily Star. 10 Saha said it is vital to keep the ATMs open during the Eid festival as the banks will remain closed for few days. If necessary, we are ready to release another Tk 15,000 crore worth of new notes. Presently, there are around Tk 110,000 crore currency notes in circulation and the figure will surge to Tk 125,000 crore with the new notes, according to the central bank. Different branches of the central bank and commercial banks will distribute the new notes. People also can take new notes from BB's Dhaka office by registering biometrically. Once a person uses the facility he/she won't be able to do it in the next six days, said Saha. In Dhaka, three booths will remain open at Bangladesh Bank's Motijheel office for smooth disbursement of new banknotes. The central bank's Sadarghat branch will also remain open Give incentive to private sector to develop cold chain: analysts The government should give incentives to private sector players to develop the cold chain for storage, transportation and proper packaging of perishables, experts said yesterday. The cold chain will help farmers get better prices and consumers quality items, they said. There should be special financial package for value-chain development of the vegetables sector, said Anwar Faruque, a former agriculture secretary. Support should be given to develop proper post-harvest management infrastructure and encourage research and development in the private sector for introducing good seeds. He shared the view at a seminar on inclusive market development in the agriculture sector, held at the capital's Sonargaon Hotel. Bangladesh Institute of Develop-ment Studies and Agri-business for Trade Competitiveness Project (ATC-P), branded as Katalyst, organised the event. Vegetable production in Bangladesh stood at 1.38 tonnes in fiscal and production is growing, said Mohammad Harunur Rashid Bhuiyan, BIDS research fellow, while presenting a paper. However, various factors such as high production costs, inadequate marketing and post-harvest infrastructure restrain the sector. He said a separate policy needs to be developed for the vegetables sector that will cover all the players in the vegetable value chain. The policy should support private entrepreneurs in the marketing of green or processed vegetables. The government can encourage private companies to establish standard cold storage and vegetable packaging industries at local level by providing policy support and developing an incentive structure. 11 Ensuring quality seed, pesticide and fertiliser through proper monitoring is also important. This is a big problem in vegetables. There are complaints of over-usage of pesticides and fertilisers. Citing fertilisers, he said the dealers' appointment process has to go beyond the hands of the elite and the powerful. Adulteration of fertilisers also needs to controlled, he added. In another paper, BIDS Senior Research Fellow Nazneen Ahmed stressed regulation and monitoring to ensure that only quality fish fries are produced in hatcheries. Monitoring the quality of fish feed supplied by private companies is very important as adulteration is a common phenomenon, she added. Hedayetullah Al Mamoon, senior secretary of the commerce ministry, said the government wants to include every citizen in its macro development planning to ensure inclusive development. But the inclusion of the poorer section in the market mechanism is very difficult because of the presence and dominance of big players, he said.
