2 PRACTICE T h e P r actice Management Course has been specifically designed for employed legal practitioners taking the step to becoming law practice principals, whether as partners or directors of multi-practitioner law practices or as s ole practitioners. The Course will provide instruction and guidance on a range of law practice management i s s u e s from regulatory requirements to financial and risk management. T h e Course presenters are all experts in their fields. Trust accounting, ethics and risk management modules are presented by Law Society staff and Committee members with first-hand experience in the obligations and the n e e ds of the South Australian legal profession. Other modules are presented by South Australian legal practitioners with special expertise in the areas covered. T h e i n augural Course will be presented over three days and will entitle attendees to claim more than 20 CPD u n i ts which includes multiple units in each of the required categories. Some modules may also be offered on a s tand-alone basis subject to capacity. Day 1 will focus on the regulation of the legal profession in SA and will include sessions on the following: o The regulatory framework in SA. o Statutory obligations with respect to practising certificates including CPD, show cause, supervision and s e c tions 21 and 23. o The SA Professional Indemnity Insurance Scheme. o The Professional Standards Scheme. o Trust account regulation including investigations, external examinations, the combined trust and statutory i n terest accounts, ADIs, Society publications and support. o Trust account management, compliance, supervision, risk management systems and software. o The role and function of the Legal Profession Conduct Commissioner and the other disciplinary bodies. Day 2 will focus on lawyers professional responsibilities and will involve sessions on the following: o Obligations in tort, contract and fiduciary law, professionalism, fitness to practice, duty to the court, the l awyer-client relationship. o Duties to the client competence, loyalty and trust, duty to account, best interests of the client, c onfidentiality and privilege, conflict of interest, informed consent, termination of retainer. o Other duties advertising, undertakings, third parties, supervision. o Costs disclosure and recovery. o Developing systems and programmes that promote ethical behaviour. o Ethical decision making. Day 3 will focus on Law Practice Management and will include sessions on the following: o Risk management. o Financial management. o Technology and innovation. o Health and well-being. o Practitioner support services. o Business development and marketing. o People management.

4 MIA BELL Professional Standards Scheme M i a Bell has managed the Law Society s Professional Standards Scheme s i n ce She has an extensive knowledge of the legislative and o perational requirements of the Scheme, both in South Australia and i n t e r s t ate. Mia coordinates the national PSS Scheme Managers group. M i a has an Honours degree in Law and a Bachelor of Arts. JODIE BRADBROOK People Management J o die has been a practising solicitor for more than 17 years. Her current f o cus is on Workplace Relations, Employment & Safety. She is a member o f the Law Society of South Australia, the Industrial Relations Society o f South Australia, the Australian Labour and Employment Relations A s s o ciation. TIM COGAN Legal Costs T i m Cogan is a sole practitioner who runs a costs practice. H e consults i n all areas of costs and in all jurisdictions. H e covers the full range of costs including solicitor/client costs and recovery and advice on party/party costs. HARRY COUMI Trust Accounting I v e been with the Law Society for 10 years in a compliance, educative and investigator role within the Ethics and Practice Unit. I visit law practices and communicate with principals and their staff in order to assist and educate them to perform and meet their trust account s t atutory and regulatory requirements. In a previous life before the Law Society, I had 25 years of experience in the accounting, finance and t r u s t e e industry.
5 GIANNA DI STEFANO Risk Management and Health and Well-Being Gianna s experience in private practice ranged from working with a s o l e practitioner in a suburban office, working in a medium sized A delaide city firm and, managing a small suburban practice. She practised mainly in the area of civil litigation and accepted i n s t r u ctions for a wide range of work in the smaller firm environment. T h i s range of experience of different areas of work and types of practice provided an ideal background for her current position of P r o f e s s i o n al Indemnity Risk Manager. DEEJ ESZENYI Ethical Decision Making D e e j is a Barrister at Wright Chambers. She joined the Bar in 2008 after 25 years as a Partner at a medium size generalist firm. She was P r e s i dent of the Law Society in 2005/06 and is a member of the Law Society Ethics and Practice Committee. GRANT FEARY Risk Management and Health and Well-Being P r i o r to joining Law Claims as a Senior Claims Manager in 2014 Grant h ad over 25 years experience in many different aspects of commercial l i t i g ation. He practised in firms of varying sizes, ranging from full s e r v i ce national firms to small boutique litigation firms. PAUL GORDON Technology and Innovation P aul is a Senior Associate at NDA Law. One of Adelaide s leading e x perts in social media and privacy law, his work focuses on i n t e l l e ctual property and technology, with an interest in social media and online law, commercialisation of new technologies, and dispute r e s o l u t i o n.
6 ALISON HODKIN Trust Accounting P r i o r to commencing with the Society in 2012, Alison supervised the f i n ance department of a large law practice in Adelaide. A l i s o n has almost 30 years experience in legal accounting, in Australia and the U K, together with a banking background prior to entering the legal f i e l d. CHRIS JOHNSTON Business Development and Marketing C h r i s Johnston is a Lawyer and RMA, that has been practising e x clusively in the area of migration for the last 11 years. He is a member o f the Law Society's small Practice Committee and also the SA C o m m i t t e e for the Migration Institute of Australia. ANNIE MACRAE Law Society Support Services A n n i e MacRae has been administering the Law Society s wellbeing s e r v i ces since Those services are the LawCare Counselling Service and the Society s three Support Groups. Prior to that time, A n n i e worked as a solicitor in private practice for eight years. ADRIANA MAINAS Regulation and Ethics Adriana Mainas is a legal officer with the Society s Ethics & Practice U nit. S he assists practitioners to understand and comply with their p r o f essional obligations. S he supervises the Professional Obligations module of the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice and teaches the R egulations and Conduct Rules component. S he previously lectured at t he College of Law and worked in private practice.
7 GREG MAY Legal Profession Conduct Commissioner G r eg May commenced his role as South Australia s first Legal Profession Conduct Commissioner on 1 July Commissioner May is o ne of South Australia s most experienced and well regarded c o mmercial lawyers, having worked in the private legal sector for nearly 30 years, before becoming Commissioner. D uring his time in p r a c t i c e, he worked mainly in the areas of corporate and commercial l a w, superannuation, taxation and estate planning. ANDREA MICHAELS Financial Management Andrea is the Managing Director of NDA Law and has an extensive p r a c t i c e in tax and superannuation law, commercial law and estate p l a nning. Andrea is the Chairman of the Commercial Law Committee of the Law S o c i ety of South Australia (LSSA), the Treasurer of the LSSA, Chairman o f t he Family Business Australia (FBA) Adviser Subcommittee (SA), member of the FBA State Advisory Committee (SA) and a member the Tax Institute s Tax Reform Committee. SHARON SPENCE Trust Accounting I am a qualified Law Accountant from Scotland with 18 years trust account management experience. M y background includes senior roles i n continuous improvement, auditing and quality management within a t o p four bank. This contributes to my educative role within the Society which I regard as a critical element in assisting the profession meet t h e i r statutory obligations.
