33 Top Reasons Why Girls Should Get Outdoors Findings from the 2014 More than S mores Report* Girls really enjoy outdoor activities in Girl Scouts. Monthly outdoor exposure contributes to girls challenge seeking and problem solving. Girl Scouts who get outdoors are twice as likely to connect with and care for the environment than non-girl Scouts. Girls of color and girls in lower socioeconomic backgrounds report even stronger benefits from outdoor experiences. It was my first time on the water, in a lake. I was scared at first but when I started to paddle I got the hang of it. I really loved it. 10-year-old Girl Scout, Missouri Because of Girl Scouts 71% 48% of girls tried anoutdoor activity for the first time. of girls helped other girls do an outdoor activity. 71% 29% of girls improved an outdoor skill. of girls overcame a fear of an outdoor activity. *More Than S mores, a 2014 study by the Girl Scout Research Institute, talked to nearly 3,000 Girl Scouts in fourth-through-eighth-grade. 37 Everything in Girl Scouting is based on the Girl Scout Promise and Law, which includes many of the principles and values common across religions. So while we are a secular organization, Girl Scouts has always encouraged girls to take spiritual journeys via their faiths' religious recognitions. Girls of all grade levels can now earn the My Promise, My Faith pin, which complements existing religious recognitions and allows girls to further strengthen the connection between their faith and Girl Scouts. Once each year, a girl can earn the My Promise, My Faith pin by carefully examining the Girl Scout Law and tying it directly to tenets of her faith. Requirements for this pin are included in The Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting for all levels. Created by national religious organizations to encourage the spiritual growth of youth members, religious recognition programs reinforce many of the values integral to Girl Scouting and help girls grow stronger in and learn more about their chosen faith. Each religious organization develops and administers its own program. The brochure "To Serve God" (PDF) lists the religious recognitions created by various faith groups. You can find this 37
38 brochure, a video explaining religious recognition programs, and other resources for collaborating with faith communities at P.R.A.Y. Publishing. Girl Scouts is an environment that teaches girls to embrace their inner leadership. Girls can earn various awards for working with girls in a troop or outdoor setting. Cadette Program Aide Award (CPA) Girl Scout Cadettes receive their Program Aide award by earning one LiA award, completing council-designed leadership course training (Girl Scouts of Citrus Elements Program) and working directly with younger girls over six activities (additional to the LiA) COUNSELOR IN TRAINING (CIT I) - Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors mentor younger girls in a camp setting as they build skills toward becoming a camp counselor. To earn this award Girl Scouts complete a leadership course designed by the council on outdoor experiences (Girl Scouts of Citrus Elements Program) and work with younger girls over the course of a camp session. COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING II PIN (CIT II) - Girl Scout Ambassadors earn this award by working with younger girls over the course of at least one camp session while focused on increasing their skills in one specific area--such as riding instruction, lifeguarding, or the arts. 38

81 A Girl Scout council is responsible for seeing that all activities are planned and carried out so as to safeguard the health, safety and general well-being of the participants. Girl Scout Safety Guidelines and checkpoints provide guidance in meeting this responsibility. Every troop leader should be thoroughly familiar with and follow the guidance given in Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints. In the event that a serious accident or a major emergency does occur, Citrus Council has well defined procedures which must be followed: The adult in charge will: 1. See that each driver carries in her/his car: a. A completed parent permission slip for each girl b. A first aid kit and the appropriate insurance forms c. A copy of Citrus Council Emergency Procedures 2. Provide each person with information concerning what to do if she/he becomes separated from the group. For example: a. Cars will proceed to an agreed upon checkpoint or destination. b. Girls will proceed to an agreed upon destination. c. Girls who may be left behind or lost will be instructed to stay in one location that is safe and as close as possible to where they were last seen. 3. Observe all site regulations at Citrus Council program centers. These site regulations are sent to each troop leader when the troop's reservation is confirmed and are also posted at the program centers. 1. In case of any first aid treatment, the adult in charge will: a. See that a qualified first aider or other qualified medical personnel gives treatment according to Red Cross First Aid Procedures. PLEASE NOTE: If a child requires a medication prescribed by a physician, she must take it herself. First aiders are not allowed to give medication. First aiders will hold the medication and see that the child receives it as scheduled on the label of the medication. 2. In case of fire, flood or storm the adult in charge will: a. Follow the emergency procedures for the site, which will be posted at council-owned properties. b. Use the following guidelines to develop on-site emergency procedures for sites other than councilowned properties: 1. Move the girls to a safe location. 2. Place someone in charge of the group. 3. Contact the proper authorities such as the forest ranger, sheriff, police or fire department. 4. Notify the troop's emergency contact person, who will notify families and the council representative. (OVER) 81

95 The Fall Product Program in Citrus Council is made up of three parts: 1. Mags and More, Friends and Family magazine renewal, candles, tumblers and organic veggies, Great American Opportunities 2. Chocolate and nut sale from Ashdon Farms 3. Reachout Booklets Troops/Groups may participate in one or all parts of the Fall Product Program. The girl and her parents must be given the option to decide. Participation is voluntary. Participation in at least one part of the Fall Product Program is required as a prerequisite for obtaining approval of future money-earning projects. The Fall Product Program is usually held in September and October for troops to earn startup funds. Girl Scouts of Citrus determines specific dates and establishes procedures for the program. Training is provided for the troop leader and product program chair. Troops/groups who participate in this portion are asked to solicit magazine renewals or subscriptions from friends and family members only. Troops/Groups are also asked to submit one address booklet per girl of at least eight names and addresses of people personally known by the girls, outside of their city/town. Magazine renewal and subscription information then will be sent to those individuals through the mail. Troops earn a percentage of each magazine subscription and each photo keepsake they sell. Troops will earn a flat rate for each complete reachout booklet they submit. The GSC Board of Directors establishes the price for all products. Be A Reader activity material is included with the QSP portion of the program. Troops do not have to participate in QSP to do the Be a Reader activities. Participation patches for Be a Reader are available in the Girl Scouts of Citrus Shop. Troops who participate in this portion of the fall product program sell Chocolate and Nuts to the general public. Troops take pre-orders for the chocolate and nuts. They may sell door-todoor, to family and friends or at established chocolate and nut booths. 95
96 Juliettes (Individually Registered Girls) may participate in all GSC product programs in 1 of 2 ways: Juliettes can partner with another troop in their Service Community. The Service Community Chair can help find a troop in their area. The program is handled the same as with any other girl in the troop. The money earned from the Juliettes product program stays with the troop she has partnered with for the program. The troop votes ahead of time what they will do with the proceeds and the Juliette participates in those activities. All monies from the Juliette will be turned into the troop. Juliettes work directly with the Product Chair from their service community, ordering and receiving their products directly through them. All monies will be turned into the GSC finance department and earned product credits will be held in a custodial account for the Juliettes to use for Girl Scout related activities or purchases from the council shop. The Juliette will need to contact the finance department and complete a Juliette Credit Request Form to use their credits for the Girl Scout related activities or Council Shop purchases they choose. 96
97 All troops must complete the ACH section of UNIFY by the due date printed on the Fall Product paperwork. This authorizes the council to debit all monies due to council from their troop accounts and validates current banking information. UNIFY will be updated when the draft occurs, if an ACH is returned to us there will be a separate entry indicating that as well as a fee for all returns due to NSF or closed account. All troops must complete the ACH section of SMART COOKIES by the due date printed on the Cookie paperwork. This authorizes the council to debit all monies due to council from their troop accounts and validates current banking information. SMART COOKIES will be updated by council after the debit has taken place. if an ACH is returned to us there will be a separate entry indicating that as well as a fee for all returns due to NSF or closed account All monies due to council need to be in the troop s bank account on the day the final paperwork is due. It will be the troop s responsibility to have the entire balance in their account on the date the paperwork is due to council. GSC staff will not review troop accounts for funds availability. If funds are not in the account when council debits the troop s account that troop will be responsible for all charges incurred to that account. 97

101 Troops should be as self-supporting as possible. The goal is for the troop to earn enough money to pay for anticipated program activities, without resorting to asking for money from parents. Participating in money earning projects gives girls the opportunity to learn many skills: budgeting, goal setting, customer relations, and good business practices. Troop Dues: A small amount of money girls contribute to the troop each time the troop meets. Girls and parents help decide how much they can afford and agree on setting the amount usually 50 to $2.00 per meeting, refer to Safety Guidelines for more information. 101
