4 A Message from our Chief Executive Third Quarter 2013 With much of the year behind us and the January renewals period quickly approaching, this is the ideal time for the industry to reflect on what we have learned during the past year and to focus on what needs to be accomplished in the year ahead. Those of us who have attended major industry conferences over the past couple of months are well aware that topics such as capital convergence, emerging markets and the apparent increase in frequency and severity of natural catastrophes dominated discussions. While the general consensus is that the reinsurance industry is embracing each of these issues and viewing them as opportunities rather than threats, the jury is out on whether or not the industry can deliver innovative solutions fast enough to keep up with growing demand while adhering to underwriting discipline and providing value to shareholders. Here at XL, we have once again demonstrated that we are busily preparing for a changing environment in the years ahead. We just announced that industry veteran Chris McKeown will lead New Ocean Capital Management Limited, the investment management company that we recently formed with funds managed by Stone Point Capital to act as an investment manager in insurance-linked securities and other reinsurance capital markets products. Many of you will know that Chris has extensive experience as a broker, underwriter and investor. In addition to his former leading roles at Guy Carpenter and ACE Tempest Re, and Pillar Capital, he launched two reinsurance vehicles backed by hedge fund Citadel after Hurricane Katrina, New Castle Re and collateralized Bermudian reinsurer CIG Re. We view this new venture as another opportunity to expand our product offering to clients while enhancing long-term value for XL and our shareholders. In terms of adhering to underwriting discipline and providing value to shareholders, our results for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2013 also clearly reflect this. Our segment third quarter results generated an outstanding combined ratio of 85.4%. While they were significantly impacted by the German hailstorms, the floods in Mexico driven by Hurricane Ingrid and flooding in Calgary earlier this year, none of our catastrophe losses were beyond expectation given our market presence in the impacted geographies. On the other hand, our segment combined ratio for the quarter was positively impacted by $76 million of prior year reserve releases, which compares to $35.7 million a year ago. Excluding the impact of both prior year reserve releases and catastrophe losses, the segment had a combined ratio of 86.8%, which was an improvement to the 88% achieved in the third quarter of On a year to date basis the segment generated a combined ratio of 80.1%, just about identical to the 80.5% in Excluding the impact of prior year releases and catastrophe losses, our combined ratio was 83% which compares favorably to the 86.6% generated a year ago. Going into renewals we believe that we are positioned well to deal with the market environment however it plays out. We have a solid book of business, world-class underwriters and deep relationships with our clients and brokers. For example, 60% of the premiums in our U.S. catastrophe portfolio comes from ceding companies we began doing business with in the segment s first year of operations more than 20 years ago. 7 Key Results (At and for the three months ended September 30, 2013) Despite continued challenging market conditions, underwriting results included combined ratios of 85.4% for the quarter and 80.1% for the nine months ended September 30, This resulted in an underwriting profit of $65.0 million and $259.1 million, respectively. Gross premiums written for the quarter were $349.9 million, down by 16.2% compared to the prior year quarter. The decrease was mainly driven by the North America Property Treaty business non-renewal of a crop quota share treaty and reductions in volume and shares on certain North America property exposures. In addition, premiums decreased in the International business group through the re-underwriting of the Latin America business, particularly on property lines. Net premiums earned for the quarter were $446.6 million, down by 7.5% driven by re-underwriting activities in the International business group on marine lines and in Latin America throughout the year, and from the non-renewal in North America property of a crop quota share treaty. During the quarter, XL s segment once again demonstrated thought leadership and innovation. Some examples include: Formation of new Bermuda-based company with private equity firm Stone Point Capital to act as an investment manager in insurance-linked securities and other reinsurance capital markets products. Completion of the centralization of marine underwriting in London, which is being used as the center of excellence for XL s marine and energy reinsurance business. Hosting a successful Periodic Payment Order (Catastrophic Bodily Injury) Seminar in London that attracted some 80 insurance industry clients and brokers.
