The Cost of Driving Carlos s gross annual salary is $35 000/year He is a single 28-year-old and needs his vehicle to drive 20 km (one way) to work 5 days a week His personal driving, which includes running errands, visiting friends, and vacationing is estimated at 800 km per month Part A: Determine a Budget 1. What s the difference between gross income and net income? 2. Using the Federal tax rates below, calculate Carlos s net income. Show your work Now consider some of Carlos s living expenses (rent, groceries, cell phone, etc.) and determine how much you think Carlos can afford towards a vehicle payment each month. Annual Gross Income = $ Net Income = $ Monthly Allotment for Car Payments = $ 1
Part B: Choosing a Vehicle 4. YOUR DREAM CAR (JUST FOR FUN!) I know you want to see how much it would cost for your dream car so go ahead and find out! Go to the dealership website of your dream car and select the Build and Price feature. Build your car to your heart s content. Vehicle Make and Model: Financing and Leasing Details -choose a term of 5 years (60 months) Details Financing Leasing Manual or Automatic Transmission? Vehicle Price (including taxes) Interest Rate Monthly Payment 5. BACK TO REALITY Choose one new and one used vehicle that would suit Carlos s needs and fit into his budget o New vehicle Vehicle Make and Model: Fuel Efficiency: L/100km (city) L/100km(highway) Search Fuel Efficiency here: Financing and Leasing Details -choose a term of 5 years (60 months) Details Financing Leasing Manual or Automatic Transmission? Vehicle Price (including taxes) Interest Rate Monthly Payment 2
o Used vehicle Find a used vehicle (less than 7 years old) to purchase on the internet. Print a copy of the advertisement to attach to this assignment. Vehicle Make and Model: # kms: Automatic or manual: Fuel Efficiency: L/100km (city) L/100km(highway) Use an auto loan calculator from a bank s website to determine monthly payments. Assume a 10% interest rate and a 5 year term. Price: Monthly Loan Payment: 6. What is the difference between buying a vehicle and leasing a vehicle? 7. List three advantages and three disadvantages of each option: Buying a New Car Buying a Used Car Leasing Advantages Disadvantages Advantages Disadvantages Advantages Disadvantages 8. Which option do you think would be appropriate for Carlos? Explain your reasoning. 3
Part C: Operating Expenses When you buy a vehicle, you must consider more than just the cost of purchasing and financing it. You must also think about day-to-day operating costs such as licencing, fuel, maintenance, and repairs. These expenses contribute significantly to the cost of owning and operating a vehicle. 9. Based on Carlos s estimated driving distances and current fuel prices, calculate how much he can expect to spend on fuel each month. Show your work in the space provided. Distance Driven (km/month) Fuel Efficiency Rating (L/100 km) Fuel Consumption (L/month) Cost of Fuel ($/L) Total Fuel Cost ($/month) 10. How much will he spend on oil changes every year? Justify your reasoning. Assume an oil change is needed every 5000 km. 11. Make some estimates about how much Carlos may need to spend on other operating costs during the first 5 years he has his vehicle. Explain. 4
Part D: Insurance Costs 11. Carlos has been driving for 11 years. He had one minor collision (and was charged with making an improper left turn) 3 years ago with a claim of $2200. He has no other charges. Using the sheet on the back of this page get an estimate of Carlos monthly insurance payments. Show your work. 12. List factors that affect the cost of insuring a vehicle. Part E: Putting it Together 13. List and total Carlos s monthly car expenses to determine the total cost per month. Show all calculations. 5
