12 TIPS FOR RISING SENIORS AND JUNIORS Start college search early, preferably during the summer Use each college s Net Price Calculator to determine how much money you will have to come up with Use What s Next Illinois EFC Calculator to determine what your EFC is. This is extremely important information it will let a student know whether he/she meets one of the basic requirements for the Gates Millennium Scholarship. It also helps students estimate how much need-based state and federal grant aid they are eligible to receive Start college applications in August, complete them by November 15th Begin writing scholarship essays in early fall Identify who you would like to write your letters of recommendation Provide your recommenders with your academic resume that outlines your academic and career accomplishments, volunteerism and service learning Volunteer, volunteer, volunteer! The best way to learn if you are really passionate about a career is to find a service learning/volunteerism opportunity to immerse yourself in the field Participate in an internship the goal again to immerse yourself in the career to find out if it s what you really like Participate in dual enrollment. Not only will this save time and money, it will also provide you with an opportunity to become exposed to the college-life prior to enrolling as an undergraduate student. Remember to log your experiences in your WNI portfolio! Cataloging these experiences will make it easier when you are applying for scholarships that require this information.

22 WHAT S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? 1. Grand Valley State offered her $8,000 in institutional grants and over $9,000 in Direct Stafford and PLUS loans 2. One of the institutional scholarships is non-renewable, so she ll have to come up with $1,000 additional dollars off the bat 2 nd year 3. The College Work Study Award does not get applied to tuition, room and board. It can be deceiving to students who don t understand that CWS will provide them with a check, not a credit to their financial aid bills

34 Professional center updates (school-level reports): 1. EXPLORE, PLAN and ACT milestones will be autopopulated when scores are included in the data upload 2. SAVED SCHOLARSHIPS, SAVED RESUMES, and SAVED DOCUMENTS REPORTS will be corrected this fall to enable school-based staff to view the lists of scholarships in the EXCEL reports and view the saved resumes and uploaded Individual Learning Plans (ILPs). 36 10 TH GRADE ILP MILESTONES As you can see, two milestones were completed during his freshman year. Once he begins work on the 10 th grade milestones, he has the option of retaining his Interest Profiler results or retaking them. Also, he will be able to update his plan of study for the fall semester. All activity is tracked and dated. To view the student s work, simply click on the hyperlink for the activity. 41 TESTGEAR Every school has its own TestGEAR code that school-based staff can use to view student progress through ACT, SAT or PSAT test prep. Subject area teachers may want to have students complete vocabulary labs, and practice reading, mathematics and writing tests. They can either be timed or untimed, on-line or you can print the paper version. It s great to pre- and posts test them to monitor their progress. You can click the tabs to see which students enrolled, took a preliminary assessment of their skills (BrainScan), view their lesson scores, and practice test results.
