ISSUE #E10 DECEMBER 2015 A n th rac i te E x tra Convention report: CONTENTS 1 - CONVENTION REPORT 2 - Bylaws changes 3 - New Books 4 - RESTORATION REPORT 5 - FD&S and Website 40th Anniversary Convention a success Although everything fell apart regarding any special train trip on the Sunday of the weekend, we did have a great time at our convention activities at the Scranton Hilton on Saturday. Also the Friday evening night photo session at Steamtown was a hit for those who attended. Pat McKnight, Steamtown Historian gave a great presentation on the building of the Lackawanna Cut-off between Scranton and Binghamton while Bob Bahrs gave us a detailed look at the DL&W s Scranton both past and present. Carl Rose s program was an interesting look at the Pullman car types and routes involving the Lehigh Valley (and some other railroads). Rich Jahn gave a presentation on forty years of ARHS history. With Steamtown, GVT and Reading Tech s help and cooperation we were able to feature locomotives painted for Jersey Central, Reading, Below: The photographers gather after dark at Steamtown for the Friday Lackawanna. and Lehigh Valley in various night photo session. Right: CNJ 1554 on a freight train of historic freight interesting settings. cars owned by GVT Company. Above: Four of the anthracite railroads represented in this photo.
The Board of Directors of the ARHS would like to designate our Friday, February 12, 2016 meeting at Quakertown Train Station in Quakertown, PA as an annual meeting to review and vote on two proposed changes to the organizational bylaws Budget The Budget has been reviewed and approved by the Board of Directors with a $2, month net income proposed for June 30, This budget is aligned with our actual and financial experience and maintains funding and expense levels for Copies of the proposed budget can be obtained in advance by contacting edwhite0013@icloud.com, Proposed Changes to Organizational Bylaws The board recommends two changes to our organizational bylaws, which are outlined in detail below. Draft Dissolution Statement The ARHS is a 501c3-certified tax-exempt corporation, entitling the ARHS for exemption from state sales tax for all purchases by the organization to support our efforts. However, to qualify for this exemption, the bylaws need a dissolution statement aligned with standards established by the State of Pennsylvania. The ARHS has a dissolution statement in Section 10.2 of our bylaws. However, the ARHS would like to replace the existing dissolution statement with the proposed statement below that is aligned with standards from the State of Pennsylvania for sales tax exemption: Upon the dissolution of the corporation or the organization, the Board of Directors or governing staff shall, after paying or making provision for the payment of all of the liabilities of the corporation or organization, dispose of all of the assets of the corporation or organization in such manner, or to such organization(s) organized and operated exclusively for charitable, educational, religious, or scientific purposes which shall at the time qualify as an exempt organization(s) under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954 (or corresponding provision of any future United States Internal Revenue Law), as the Board of Directors or governing staff shall determine. Any such assets not so disposed of shall be disposed of by the Court of Common Pleas of the county in which the principal office of the corporation or organization is then located, exclusively for such purposes as said Court shall determine, which are organized and operated exclusively for such purposes. Term Limits for President The Board of Directors recognizes the individual carrying the role of President of the organization has and will continue to have a relatively high burden of their time in effectively serving the organization in this role. Recognizing this challenge, the Board recommends revision to Bylaws Section 5.2, adding: The position of the President is limited to a maximum of four (4) consecutive years. After a total of four consecutive years, the individual in the role of president must step down from this role but may remain on the Board of Directors. After a period of two (2) years, the individual may again run for the role of President.
New Books CNJ Steam Locomotive Diagrams by Victor Roseman. This diagram book contains an overview of the CNJ's steam engines in their final years The diagrams are scaled to 1:87, HO. Some large erecting card drawings were available, but with the extreme reduction necessary to fit in this book, most of the fine lines burned out (and did not show,) or bled together into irregular black areas, neither of which provided any information. Victor has re-drawn the originals in 1:72 scale to fit on the pages of this book and provide as much detail as possible. All photos are from the collection of Victor's close friend and CNJ enthusiast Donald A. Thompson, and illustrate most every class of engine provided in the drawings. Victor created all of the ink drawings working from the originals, and has organized the tables and charts of engine data. He set the computer type fonts to replace the hand written data on the original diagram sheets to make these more legible. He also created the layout and design of this book. $24.95 available on the new ARHS website. The L&NE Operations on the East End by Peter Brill If you saw the recent three-part L&NE article and the one-part article on the last L&NE Maybrook freight in FD&S, then you have an idea about this book. However, the 308-page book covers the entire history of the L&NE and predecessors, has a lot more information on operations and has a chapter of about 70 pages of paperwork including conductor's delay reports showing steam operations in the 1940's. There is virtually no duplication of photos with the FD&S articles as the books features images by Gene Collora, Bob Collins, John Riley (via RR Ave. Enterprises), John Stellwagen and John Treen. Given the L&NE's extensive usage of trackage rights to reach Maybrook, the book has heavy coverage of the NYS&W between Hainesburg and Swartswood junctions and of the Erie/EL's Pine Island and Montgomery branches. There is also some information on operations between Pen Argyl and the Delaware River but the focus is east of the Delaware River. The book is soft-cover, black and white, on glossy paper. $48.00 on the new ARHS website Lehigh Valley Railroad with Dave Augsburger - Alco, Baldwin and EMD Switchers: 52 page all color book featuring the photographs taken by Dave Augsburger. These photos cover the years 1961 to 1976 on the Lehigh Valley, most never before published. Several photos of switchers on various branchlines as well as in mainline service. $20.95 on the new ARHS website
Restoration: 2015 has proved to be an interesting year for the ARHS restoration group. Early in the year we did a lot of cosmetic restoration work to FA2 #596. This involve a lot of cleaning, removal of equipment which was no longer needed and stabilization of much of the structural steel with either paint or rust converter. We are hoping to make more progress in F3 #664 proved to be quite the workhorse this year at Steamtown - operating on nearly every short shuttle train all year long. With out a partner locomotive (both 663 and Steamtown s GP9 #514 were out of service all year) 664 was not out on any long distance excursions. 664 did receive work to improve the cab heat and the replacement of an EMD trim piece which had been broken during the display at Spencer, NC. In the hopes of getting a partner for the 664 we put a lot of time, along with some Steamtown mechanics, into the 663. We installed the rebuilt main generator and air compressor and performed some other major engine work. In the end we were still dealing with an antique and out dated generator to air compressor coupling which is still causing vibration issues. The search is ongoing for a newer style replacement coupling which has proven to be difficult to locate as of now. We have continued to make progress on the B unit #664B. We appreciate you support for our finish the B unit fundraiser as we feel the goal is within site. Much replacement wiring work was done this year. Cleaning years of old sludge from the internals of the engine is ongoing. The main generator commutator and brush holders have been cleaned and rebuilt components such as water pumps should be reinstalled this winter. All of the F units are inside at Steamtown this winter so work can continue on both the 664A and the 664B. With a little bit of luck we should be ready to try to start the 664B next Summer.
FD&S: Current issue is 23-2 with the LV C628 under Starrucca Viaduct on the cover is currently being worked on (after the Editor gets finished with this long delayed Extra). Website: Our web designer is rolling out a new ARHS website as of January 2, This should allow us to keep it up to date with more regular updates.
