3 Systematic reviews what, when and how All documents apart from TRs are subject to Systematic Review : WAs review after 3 years (organised by original secretariat) to determine if to confirm, convert to another deliverable, or withdraw. WAs may exist for a maximum of 6 years. PAS (ISO only) are valid for an initial period of 3 years, which can be extended for a single period of 3 years after which it must be published as another form of normative document or be withdrawn. Review period is 5 months. TR are regularly reviewed by the TC to ensure they remain valid. Withdrawal is the responsibility of TC. TS must be reviewed not later than 3 years after publication to re-examine the situation leading to publication of a TS and, if possible, achieve the necessary agreement for publication of a full standard. No limit to the number of times a TS can be reconfirmed. Review period is 5 months. IS and EN reviewed to ensure still relevant 3 years after publication then at least every 5 years thereafter. Review period is 5 months. SRs for IS, TS and PAS are initiated by ISO CS according to the approved cycle, although the responsible TC may initiate them earlier if it considers this necessary. All members of ISO or CEN are balloted for SRs, though only P members of ISO are obliged to vote Standardization seminar, 10 November 2011, step 4, slide 3

Confirmation without technical change: Criteria: Standard has been adopted unchanged for national use in at least five countries No technical change is envisaged Simple majority of P members vote to support this 2. Amendment or revision (Retention, with change(s)): Criteria: Standard has been adopted unchanged for national use in at least five countries One or more countries have identified significant reason(s) for change If simple majority of P members consider amendment necessary then new project is registered without the need for a NWIP. New project follows normal development schedule. 8 Options Withdrawal Members bodies informed of this decision by ISO CEO and have three months to object. Objections considered by ISO TMB. 4. Change of status of TS or PAS to IS conversion initiated by a text, up-dated as appropriate, being submitted to the normal development procedures for an International Standard. Usually starts at DIS stage but can be at CD stage if changes are needed and judged significant. Updating usually undertaken by original project group. 5. Reinstatement of withdrawn standard Not subject to SR process If reinstatement considered necessary by TC then document re-balloted at either DIS or FDIS stage and normal approval criteria apply.
