5 ALARMING FACTS Millions are spend on optimizing plants, BUT very little is spend on training staff operating and maintaining these technical advanced plants. Emphasis on qualification, but competence, practical assessment, and refresher training is neglected. Pool of Ex experts shrinking due to the lack of formal qualification structures for the competent old hands and youngsters entering this field

9 OHS Act 8.(1) Every employer shall provide and maintain, as far as is reasonably practicable, a working environment that is safe, and without risk to the health of his employees. 8.2.(e) providing such information, instructions, training and supervision as may be necessary to ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety at work of his employees;

12 SANS IEC & Qualification of personnel The inspection and maintenance of installations shall be carried out only by experienced personnel, whose training has included instruction on the various types of protection and installation practices, the requirements of this standard, the relevant national regulations/company rules applicable to the installation and on the general principles of area classification (see Annex B). Appropriate continuing education or training shall be undertaken by personnel on a regular basis. Evidence of the relevant experience and training claimed shall be available.

Lack of skilled, competent workforce is everyone's problem Youngsters must know the risks involved in hazardous locations, only achievable by proper training, and practical exposure Don t forget the CURRENT XPERTS they also need proper training How do you validate saving cost in lea of safety and training

Ensure training covers both practical and theoretical applications Have a training programme for each employee (PDP) Managers also needs to attend technical training Include the CURRENT XPERTS!!!!!!!!!! Have non technical staff also attend training (buyer, secretaries, operators, etc..)
