2 Programme goals Support excellent scientific research that contributes towards the solution of global problems The focus will be on reducing poverty and global risks as well as on making public goods available in developing countries. Sub-targets central to the program: Generate scientific knowledge and research-based solutions for reducing poverty and global risks in poor countries Offer national and international stakeholders methods and options for finding integrated, holistic approaches to solving problems Scientific skills and know-how in dealing with the complexity of global problems for the benefit of societies in poor countries Programme organization Steering committee SDC and SNF representatives Review panels International experts Specific for each thematic programme 2

3 Temathic Research Research in ex-ante defined areas of main interest for developing countries At least one Swiss research groups and two groups of two different countries (low income countries) Upper middle income countries might participate additionally 2 x 3 years projects, CHF per year 40% of budget and 50% of academic personnel in developing countries 10-15% of budget for communication and implementation Topics Social conflicts: conflicts that may result from deficiencies of public institutions, state fragility and the variations of governance capabilities, as well as ways and means for mitigating such deficiencies and reducing or avoiding conflicts Employment: creation of jobs and income for poor population groups in developing countries within the context of sustainable development Agricultural production systems and food security: how the production of agricultural goods could be improved and food security increased Sustainable use and management of ecosystems: how ecosystems can be used sustainably for reducing poverty and how negative environmental influences can be reduced Provision systems and financing mechanisms in the public health sector: new health systems and financing mechanisms for the benefits of poor people 3

4 Social conflicts: detailed topics Political reconstruction and democratization processes and fragile and conflict torn states Conflicts over scarce natural resources, with a focus on water issues Chronic causes and consequences of state fragility and weakness of public institutions Thematically Open Research funding of high-quality research that contributes to the solution of global problems in poor countries and is not covered in the thematic programs Bottom-up selection of topics Three years projects up to CHF One group in CH and one in the partner countries Same rules for budget apply as for thematic research 4
