2 Recent Mandates The MDG Report 2011 LDCs lag behind in meeting 2015 targets Program of Action for the LDCs for the decade (A/conf.219/3/Rev.1, May 2011) To overcome the structural challenges faced by the LDCs in order to eradicate poverty, achieve IADGs and graduate from LDC category 2

3 Recent Mandates (continued) GA Resolution The Future We Want (A/RES/66/288, Sept 2012) Three years from 2015 target date of MDGs the number of people living in poverty, especially in the LDCs continues to increase The international community is to enhance support to the overarching goal of the Istanbul Programme of Action to enable half of the LDCs to graduate by 2020 The need for enhances capacity building through exchange of experiences, expertise and knowledge transfer for strengthened LDCs institutional and human resource capacities 3

4 Project Description Aims to build the capacity of the public sector in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to deliver quality services equitably through the transfer and adaptation of innovative public administration practices and contribute to the achievement of internationally agreed development goals, including the MDGs Facilitates collaboration between governments for improved public administration and the development of LDCs Builds on the extensive work conducted by UNDESA, particularly in the context of the United Nations Public Service Awards Programme (UNPSA), to collect, reward, disseminate and share knowledge on innovative practices in public administration Timeline: January 2013 December

5 Expected outcomes Increased awareness and knowledge of public sector officials about innovative practices to deliver quality services equitably Strengthened capacities of the public sector in least developed countries to promote innovations and implement good practices that best address specific citizens needs 5

6 Project Activities An Expert group meeting to identify specific MDG-related areas of service delivery and discuss the best ways to bring innovative solutions to governance problems of the LDCs that are looking to adapt such solutions in the same or similar areas; Two capacity-building workshops for senior public administration officials in LDCs to share and adapt innovative practices; Design of two online training courses in support of the transfer of innovation in the public sector; Three practitioner-to-practitioner knowledge-transfer workshops; Publication on lessons learned on the transfer and adaptation of innovative practices. 6
