WHO REPORTS TO THE CREDIT REPORT AGENCY (CRA)? Lenders obanks ocredit Card Companies oretail stores with credit cards availability omortgage and finance companies Data Furnishers ocell phone companies olandlords outility Accounts omedical Billing Information
CREDIT SCORE Mathematical number created to help evaluate the risk with lending a consumer money
CREDIT SCORES Most common scoring systems are produced by credit reporting agencies: Scoring System Score Range FICO VantageScore Generally, higher score = higher chance of credit repayment How the score is calculated depends on the credit scoring model
INFORMATION IN A CREDIT SCORE On-Time Payments Oldest Line of Credit Credit Utilization Recent Inquires New Accounts Available Credit
INFORMATION IN A CREDIT SCORE On-Time Payments A history of late payments even those missed by just one or two days can be damaging. A payment that is 30 days late is always reported to the credit bureaus. Credit Care Impact: VERY HIGH A >90% B 60-90% C 1-59% D <1% Oldest Line of Credit A history of responsible credit use is ideal under most credit scoring models. Tip: Keep your oldest accounts open and in good standing! Credit Score Impact: HIGH A >25 years B 8-15 years C 2-7 years D <2 years
INFORMATION IN A CREDIT SCORE Credit Utilization Lenders usually look at how much credit is available as well as the amount that s been used. An induvial who has maxed out his or her credit cards or other lines of credit may not be able to obtain additional credit or competitive rates. Credit Score Impact: HIGH A <10% B 10-30% C 31-61% D>61% Recent Inquiries Recent inquiries refer to credit inquiries in the last two years. Lenders see too many recent inquiries as a sign of credit problems. Most scoring models are lenient when similar inquiries are reported close together because customers shop around for lowest rates. However, these inquiries may count against your credit score. Credit Score Impact: LOW A 0 B 1-2 C 3-5 D >5
INFORMATION IN A CREDIT SCORE New Accounts A new account refers to accounts opened in the last two years. From a lender s perspective, opening too many accounts in a short window of time points to possible credit problems. It s important to establish consistent credit behavior for an excellent score. Credit Score Impact: LOW A 0-2 B 3-4 C 5-6 >6 Available Credit Lenders look at dollar amounts on each account, comparing total balances to total credit lines. A Low amount of available credit can impact your score negatively. Tip: Don t borrow more that you need, and keep a solid buffer of available credit. Credit Score Impact: LOW A >$ B $15001-$50000 C $ D <$2500
FICO SCORES The FICO score was first introduced in 1989 by FICO Fair, Isaac, and Company FICO model is used by the vast majority of banks and credit grantors FICO Scores consider both + and - information in your credit report Late payments will lower your FICO Scores Establishing a good track record of making payments on time will raise your score
CREDIT SCORE IMPACT FICO Score EXAMPLE: $15,000 LOAN (3 YEAR FIXED AUTOMOBILE) Interest Rate Monthly Payment 3 Year Amount % $457 $16, % $475 $17, % $516 $18,576 $2,124 can be saved over the lifetime of this loan because of a good credit score!
ISABELLA What are examples of how Isabella s credit history is affecting her financial well-being?
POSITIVE CREDIT HISTORY Positive Credit History= Higher Credit Score What can YOU do? Check your credit report annually Pay your bills consistently and on time Maintain reasonable amounts of available credit Apply for credit sparingly Do not have too many of one type of Have a mix of different types of credit accounts
STRATEGIES TO BUILD CREDIT Small closedend loan Credit card with a co-signer Secured credit card Authorized user on a credit card From a depository institution Set up automatic payments Co-signer person who is equally responsible for paying back debt Requires a cash security deposit Ensures the credit card company will be paid Authorized user is not legally responsible for the debt but they will build a credit history Having no credit history may be just as challenging to a consumer as having a negative history
CREDIT REPORT ADVICE-FROM YOU! What are three pieces of advice for Isabella? Pay her Sam s Electric World card so it is not past-due Settle her traffic ticket so she is no longer in collections Create and use a spending plan so as not to rely so heavily on credit Set up automatic payments so that her credit payments are never late Contact her school loan agencies to set up a payment plan Pay down her credit card balances by paying more than the minimum payment Continue monitoring her credit reports
SUMMARY Used to assess financial risk Credit history Credit score Enables lenders to make more objective lending decisions To develop a positive credit history Manage your money responsibly Your Present Self Impacts Your Future Self
