BALLINGER 2018 has started off strong and our employees continue to rise to the occasion as we further develop our internal processes and position ourselves to better serve you. We have new and enhanced products and offerings already available, with more on the horizon, that will not only help you meet your financial goals, but also earn and justify your confidence in us. The current economic environment indicates a continuance of rising rates as the labor market tightens with unemployment falling. We are proactively searching for ways to better serve you with the best possible rates in this rising-rate environment. We ve recently developed a new, tiered-rate product, Amplified Money Market Checking, designed to adapt to market fluctuations with the top two tiers automatically re-pricing weekly. It s a checking account, so you will maintain access to your funds, while receiving the most competitive dividend pricing around. We ve recently introduced Member Consultants at our branch offices. To support our continued growth, in May, we will undergo system maintenance to our communication networks requiring all our branches to be closed on Saturday, May 19 th. Additionally, Online Banking, our mobile app, and Sourceline will be unavailable beginning at 7:30 pm on Friday, May 18 th, through Sunday evening. We plan to offer extended hours on Thursday and Friday, May 17 th 18 th, to minimize any potential inconvenience. We ll communicate further details beginning in April. Overall, 2018 is off to a great start with the buying season beginning earlier than usual. 1 Listing prices have begun their seasonal climb with the inventory of available homes at the lowest they ve been in over two decades. 2 In Cincinnati, the median list price has increased by 21% compared to February 2017 with a 20% decrease in active listings. The average home in Cincinnati is on the market for 72 days (up 3% from last year) compared to the national average of 83 days. Browse through our new blog! gecreditunion.org/blog Establishing a Financial Safety Net Brought to you by: Investment Services Should a financial crisis arise, whether it be unexpected medical costs or job loss, having a financial safety net in place can ensure you re protected. One way to prepare for the unexpected is to establish a cash reserve, a pool of available funds to help you get through an emergency or short-term need. How much do you need? While a general rule of thumb is three to six months of expenses, the amount needed depends on a variety of factors. Do you have a mortgage? Are you making car payments? These, along with your job security, health, and income all affect how much you need to save. Build a cash reserve. If you haven t established a cash reserve, or the one you have is inadequate, you can take several steps to build your cash pool. Reduce discretionary spending: Establish a budget and reduce frivolous spending. Most importantly, stick to it! Save aggressively: If possible, use payroll deduction, set up automatic transfers to your savings accounts, and budget savings as part of your regular expenses. Earn more: Consider stashing your reserve cash in an account that can earn a higher return and add to your balance. Properly house your cash reserve. Your cash reserve should be readily available should you need it. A savings account isn t your only option; there are a variety of account alternatives that may offer a higher return, including an interest-bearing checking account or money market. Review your cash reserve periodically. Your circumstances, financial or personal, may change having a child or buying a larger home can increase your expenses. Since your cash reserve is your first line of protection against financial emergency, take time to review it annually to ensure it fits your current needs. 5 5 gecreditunion.org l Second Quarter 2018 Living Wills Brought to you by: Legal Services Living Wills contain instructions regarding medical treatment in the event of terminal illness or permanent unconsciousness. They must be signed in the presence of two witnesses or a notary. The signer must be mentally competent. Under no circumstance may an Ohioan be denied comfort care. Comfort care is defined as the minimum amount of care administered to alleviate pain and suffering but not to prolong life. Perhaps equally important, Ohio law creates a list of persons who have the highest priority in making health care decisions in the absence of a Living Will. If there is no guardian, the decision may be made by a spouse. If there is no spouse, the majority of the adult children may decide. If there are no children, then the decision falls to the patient s parents. If there are no parents, the majority of adult siblings may direct the health care. When a patient with no Living Will becomes terminally ill or permanently unconscious, the wishes of the patient must be followed. If his or her wishes are not known, the decision must be consistent with the patient s wishes as inferred from his or her character and lifestyle. The decision maker may even elect to withhold or withdraw food and water under very specific circumstances. State approved forms can be found at in their Law Library. A few tips for creating a safe password: Change your password frequently Avoid re-using former passwords Don t write down or store your login information anywhere someone else can access Avoid common phrases, names, or dates someone could guess Beware of scams. Scammers can attempt to 2 access your account by sending fake s that appear similar to an from your financial institution. If you receive a suspicious from an unknown sender regarding your information, do not click links, open any attachments, or respond. As a best practice, type the website URL into your browser directly. Any website where a financial transaction takes place should have a padlock icon to the left of the URL and should read https indicating it s a secure webpage. $ $2, $3, Avoid banking on public Wi-Fi or public 3 computers. Free Wi-Fi has weakened protection making it easier for hackers to gain access to the public airwaves and potentially steal your information. To protect yourself, avoid accessing accounts or shopping under free Wi-Fi. Taking action and implementing these tips will help provide you a safer online banking experience.
