2 The Farm Credit System The Farm Credit System is a nationwide system consisting of borrower-owned financial institutions organized as cooperatives. The system is made up of 12 Federal Land Banks which make long-term loans through Federal Land Bank Associations; 12 Federal Intermediate Credit Banks, which provide short and intermediate-term credit to Production Credit Associations and other qualified institutions serving agricultural producers; and 13 Banks for Cooperatives which made loans to agricultural, aquatic, and rural electric cooperatives and provide financial services to exporting cooperatives. Farm Credit first came to this area in 1934 when our PCA was chartered under the name of "Farmer's Production Credit Association of Norristown." It offers short and intermediate-term loans to farmers for production, operating, personal, and capital improvement purposes. Southeast Farm Credit's FLBA -- which offers long-term loans -- was chartered in 1946 under the name "National Farm Loan Association of Norristown." The Farm Credit System is not an agency of the Federal Government. While the Farm Credit Banks were originally funded by the Government, that capital was gradually repaid until, in 1968, all federal money was paid back. The System's loan funds are acquired through the sale of securities on the open bond market. The Farm Credit System, a true cooperative, is owned by its borrowers.
