AUGUST SUB-STATE PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release September 25, 2018 Metro Areas Show Moderate Employment Growth Over the Month with Trends Remaining Strong Over the Year CARSON CITY, NV Statewide, jobs increased by 3.3 percent, which correlates to 44,800 new jobs added since August of last year. The largest over the month job gain in the metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) was realized in Reno, at 700. Las Vegas saw a slight reduction in jobs over the month while Carson City remained unchanged and in line with seasonal expectations. Over the year, Reno was the only MSA that added jobs at a faster rate than the State as a whole in August. This is according to the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation s (DETR) August 2018 economic report. Additionally, August s data shows that job growth was typical over the month in the MSAs but still strong over the year. Las Vegas and Reno accounted for the majority of year over year employment gains by adding over 32,300 jobs and 9,100 jobs, respectively. In August, Las Vegas saw a small decline in employment losing 500 jobs over the month, likely due to a statistical correction following July s very large gain of 10,300 jobs. Despite the slight reduction in employment in Las Vegas and minor upticks in the Reno and Las Vegas unemployment rates over the month, metro area economic indicators continue to follow positive Statewide trends over the year. Wages and employment have increased and unemployment rates have decreased since this same time last year in the Silver State s MSA s which reflects positive signs of growth and diversification in those areas, said David Schmidt, Chief Economist, for Nevada s Department of Employment, Training & Rehabilitation. Additional August 2018 Economic Report Highlights: Job Growth in August (Seasonally-Adjusted): o Las Vegas lost 500 jobs over the month but is up 32,300 over the year (3.3 percent). o Reno added 700 jobs over the month and 9,100 over the year (3.9 percent), adding jobs at a faster rate that the State as a whole (3.3 percent). o Carson City remained unchanged from July but is up 700 jobs over the year (2.3 percent). Unemployment: o Las Vegas: 4.9 percent; up 0.2 percentage point from July, and down 0.4 percentage point from a year ago. o Reno: 3.7 percent, up 0.1 percentage point from July; down 0.3 percentage from this time last year. o Carson City: 4.3 percent, unchanged from July; down 0.2 percentage point from a year ago.

o Unemployment rates remain below five percent in 14 counties. o Unemployment rates declined on an over-the-year basis in 12 of 17 counties. o Lander, Elko, and Eureka, at 3.3 percent, hold the State s lowest unemployment rate. Job growth ranged from -17 percent in Esmeralda County to 63 percent in Storey County in the first quarter of 2018 relative to the same period in 2017. In the first quarter of 2018, all three metro areas fell slightly below the Statewide employment increase of 3.1 percent relative to the same period in 2017. As of the first quarter of 2018, average weekly wages totaled $935 in Carson City, $956 in Washoe County, and $970 in Clark County. Clark County experienced the largest decline in initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI), using a 13-week moving average, decreasing by of 7.4 percent, or almost 170 claims. In August, the UI exhaustion rate in the State s three largest counties was 34 percent in Clark County, 25.4 percent in Washoe, and 27 percent in Carson City Year-to-date online job posting activity decreased in 12 of 17 counties in August. Clark (+40,600) experienced the largest increase in ad volume over last year, totaling 140,800 ads yearto-date. - # # # - ABOUT THE RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS BUREAU The Research and Analysis Bureau is Nevada s premier source for labor market information. RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS BUREAU BRIAN SANDOVAL GOVERNOR DON SODERBERG DIRECTOR DAVID SCHMIDT CHIEF ECONOMIST NEVADA SUB-STATE LABOR MARKET OVERVIEW August 2018 Statewide, seasonally adjusted employment increased by 1,200 jobs in August, relative to July. As for Nevada s major population centers, a gain was realized in only one metropolitan statistical area (MSA) this month. In August, Las Vegas saw a small decline in employment, losing 500 seasonally-adjusted jobs, likely due to a statistical correction following July s very large gain of 10,300 jobs. The decline was the result of the area only increasing by 1,900 jobs when 2,400 were Job Growth by Metro Area Nevada Nonfarm Jobs: July - August Change Expected Seasonally Unadjusted Seasonal Adjusted Change Movement Change Total Nonfarm Jobs 3,400 2,200 1,200 Private Sector 1,500 1,200 300 Public Sector 1,900 1,000 900 expected to be added. In Reno, 9,100 jobs were added over the year, translating to a growth rate of 3.9 percent. That area saw an increase of 3,300 goods-producing jobs and 5,600 service-providing jobs. In Carson City, 700 jobs were added relative to last year, resulting in a growth rate of 2.3 percent. In the former, this is most likely due to a loss in mining jobs over the year. In the latter, 5,500 new jobs were generated over the year, leaving employment at 14,200. The manufacturing industry lead the way, accounting for nearly all of the growth in employment. As for Nevada s major population centers, Clark County, at 2.7 percent, falls slightly below the Statewide average. Washoe County also experienced a growth rate slightly lower than that for the Silver State, at 2.9 percent. Finally, Carson City experienced a 2.2 percent growth rate. Based upon the most recent QCEW information, we also examine average weekly wages in the State. Nevada wages averaged $977 per week, as of 2018:IQ. Weekly wages range from $712 (Lincoln) to $2355 (Eureka). Eight counties have payrolls above $1,000 per week. This can be attributed to their high concentration of mining, and in Storey County, logistics and manufacturing. 3.0% S O N D J F M A M J J A S O N D J F M A M J J A '16 '17 '18 Las Vegas Reno Carson City As for Nevada s major population centers, Carson City wages totaled $935 per week through the first quarter. Four counties (Esmeralda, Lincoln, Eureka, Mineral) realized rate increases over the same period last year. Esmeralda had the largest rate increase over the year by increasing by 0.9 percentage point. Churchill was the only county to have their rate remain unchanged this month. Nye, at six percent, has the highest unemployment rate in the Silver State this month. All counties remain at or below six percent unemployment in August with 14 counties below five percent. Lander, Elko, and Eureka, all at 3.3 percent, are home to the State s low- 2 The State s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is 4.5 percent in August, down from 4.6 percent in July and down from 4.9 percent in August 2017. Unemployment rates for the State s metropolitan areas and counties reported here are not adjusted for seasonality. Hence, comparisons to the State s seasonally adjusted rate should be avoided. Statewide weekly initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI), using a 13-week moving average, have declined by nearly 7.24 percent through the end of August when compared to the same period last year. However, this decrease was largely localized in Clark County which experienced a decline of 7.4 percent, or almost 170 claims. Washoe County s initial claims declined by 4.7 percent, down 12 claims from a year ago. The rest of the State s counties were stagnant or experienced declines of no more than six claims. Turning to monthly indicators, the UI exhaustion rate, which measures the average share of UI recipients that run out of benefits before finding employment, ranged from 54.6 percent in Esmeralda County to 14.3 percent in Eureka County. Clark County had an average duration of 15 weeks in August, while Washoe County and Carson City both saw average durations of 12.7 weeks. Year-to-date online job posting activity decreased in 12 of 17 counties in August 3. Clark (+40,600) experienced the largest increase in ad volume over last year, totaling 140,800 ads year-to-date. Washoe has also seen a notable increase in ad volume over last year (+13,500), totaling 37,500 ads year-to-date. Eureka (+22), Storey (+22), and Pershing (+18) are the only other counties who saw increases in ad volume over last year. Carson City has realized the largest decrease of ads (-1,200) over last year, totaling 5,100 ads through August of this year. Other notable declines in job ads were realized in Douglas (-1000), Elko (-950), and Churchill (-740) counties. Despite job posting volume being down in many of Nevada s smaller counties, Statewide job posting activity continues to show improvement. The State as a whole has posted 196,400 ads through July, up 48,600 ads over the year. 3 Online job postings are obtained through DETR s Silver State Solutions initiative. Online job posting volume does not necessarily correlate with the level of job openings or hiring. Internal company hiring and union hiring are often not captured by online ads. High ad volume often occurs for occupations/industries that are having difficulty finding qualified candidates, high turnover positions/recurring openings, or when companies are building large candidate pools. Online job postings should only be used with caution when developing/analyzing time series trends due to the constant changes in the rate of online advertising usage and in the methods used for collecting the data.
