This section contains statistics relating to joint stock companies which are based on returns received from Registrars of Joint Stock Companies. Tables 25.1 (A) (B) to 25.4 These tables present data regarding joint stock companies at work, newly registered and ceased to work (both liquidated and struck off). Statistics are given for the number and paid-up capital of the companies, liability of which is limited by shares only. Authorised capital is given in the case of newly registered companies (Table 25.2). Companies have also been classified according to the industrial activity. The number of foreign companies, which carry on business in India have been included in Table 25.1(A)(B). The figures relate to companies incorporated elsewhere than in India, the majority of which are with sterling capital. For the data relating to previous years, earlier issues of Statistical Abstract may be referred. The tables 25.1(A)(B) and 25.4 have been modified for want of statewise and industry-wise figures. 336
