~ WIPO/GEOIEGR/97IINF.1 Rev.! page 2 GENERAL INFORMATION Objective and Speakers In view ofthe growing interest for the protection ofgeographical indications, this two-day Symposium will deal with the present state of, and future measures which could be considered to improve, the protection ofgeographical indications at the national, regional and global levels. Presentations will be made in English by experts in the field ofprotection of '- geographical indications from Australia, Belgium, France, Hungary, Mexico and the United States ofamerica, and by officials ofthe Commission ofthe European Communities and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). There will be no simultaneous interpretation. Venue and Dates The Symposium will take place at the Hotel Eger-Park, Eger (Hungary). Eger is a historical, beautifully located baroque town in the North-Eastern part ofhungary (about 130 km from Budapest), the home offiery wines and thermal water. On Sunday, October 26, an optional excursion will take place (see below).

An optional program will be organized for accompanying persons. Registration is to be made, before September 15, 1997, with the International Bureau of WIPO, in Geneva. It is strongly recommended to arrive in Budapest on Thursday, October 23, by morning flight, and to take the shuttle bus from the airport to the Hungarian Patent Office (around 20 Swiss francs). The transfer to Eger is scheduled at 5 p.m. by bus. For participants arriving before! p.m., a sightseeing tour ofbudapest will be organized and for all participants a cold buffet will be offered in the afternoon. Return from Eger to Budapest is scheduled by bus on both October 26 and 27, at 8 a.m., arriving on each day latest at noon at Budapest airport. Excursion On Sunday, October 26, as a follow-up program, an optional excursion to Tokaj, centre ofthe most famous Hungarian wine region (visit to the Rakoczi wine cellar) will be organized (see registration form).
