Just like 3Mer Theo Schultz who looked to Healthy Living for help in getting his health back on track. Theo was hired at 3M nearly three years ago, fresh out of college. The job was a dream come true and the perfect way to apply the degree he d worked hard to complete. Even so, within his first few months on the job, Theo gained more than 15 pounds, a weight gain he attributes to sitting more than he was used to. Starting full-time work was a big change. I used to love walking, biking and running around campus, said Theo. Suddenly I had a lot less time to do those activities and wasn t prepared for the impact that would have on my health. Theo turned to Healthy Living for help. He scheduled a meeting with Karen, 3M s Registered Dietitian. Karen introduced betterfor-you foods and encouraged Theo to start eating a fruit or vegetable at every meal. Theo got involved in 3M s 5 a Day challenge, eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. You d be surprised by the difference that makes. That volume of food really adds up and keeps you satisfied, said Theo. Now, if I m hungry between meals, apples are my go-to food. Karen pushed Theo to get active again and encouraged him to keep a goal on his calendar at all times. When we first started working together, I signed up for the Tough Mudder race. I paid for it and put it on the calendar so that I had no way out, said Theo. It definitely pushed me to get off the couch! With a cleaned up diet and some activity back in his life, Theo lost the weight he d gained after college. To maintain the weight loss, he s stuck with many of the healthy habits Karen helped him begin. He eats a side salad with most meals instead of filling up on less nutritious foods. If he s going out to lunch with work friends, they all choose Subway since there may be healthier options than at some other restaurants. He chooses diet soda instead of regular. Plus, he and his wife cook more at home. I m back on track, Theo said. And that feels really good. Starting full-time work was a big change. I used to love walking, biking and running around campus. Suddenly I had a lot less time to do those activities and wasn t prepared for the impact that would have on my health. Featured News 2014 Wellness Screening Don t Forget about Your Measurements Many employees took the first step toward earning their 2015 Healthy Living incentive by discovering their health and participating in a wellness screening. It s important to continue monitoring your health vitals even when values are within range. Blood pressure measures how much pressure blood puts against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps blood through your body. Several factors can play a role in high or low blood pressure, including: being overweight, smoking, genetics, stress, high intake of salt and lack of physical activity. Total cholesterol is a type of fat that helps build cells. Have your cholesterol checked yearly or what is recommended by your physician and follow up with your physician when asked. Non-fasting glucose was measured at the onsite wellness screening. Glucose (blood sugar) is a type of sugar found in your blood that your body uses for energy. Glucose levels that remain high over time can cause damage to your nerves, kidneys, eyes and blood vessels. Body Mass Index is a simple ratio used to measure overall body fat based off height and weight. It s important to talk with your physician or health care provider to work on a plan to keep your weight in check. Waist Circumference measurement helps screen for possible health risks associated with high weight. Higher circumferences can be associated with a higher risk for developing obesity-related conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes. Information Bits Quick Quiz A food that is fat-free or low-fat will always be low in calories too? True False [Answer: False. Some fat-free and low-fat foods have extra sugars, which push the calorie amount right back up. Always read the Nutrition Facts food label to find out the calorie content and be sure and check the serving size, too.] Fitness Fact Transitioning to Outdoor Running There are many factors to consider when transitioning from indoor to outdoor running, including distance, running surface and weather. Here are four tips to help with your transition: 1. Scale back your distance and pace. If your body is used to running indoors, on a treadmill, the transition to pavement can be a bit harsh on the body. There is a slight risk of experiencing minor injury such as shin splints or soreness from changing surfaces. For the first couple weeks, consider decreasing your distance to 25 percent of your regular indoor distance. Also, remember that your pace outdoors may be slower than on a treadmill: outdoors, you are no longer running on a machine that assists you in moving your legs backwards. Don t be discouraged and don t push yourself into a pace you are not able to maintain comfortably. Ease into it. 2. Check your clothing. When dressing for your run, dress for about 10 degrees warmer than it is. Once you begin running, your body will warm up and you won t need to worry about overheating. 3. Consider your hydration. If you rely on public water fountains for hydration throughout your running route, make sure to carry your own fluids until you know that the fountains have been turned back on for the season. 4. Evaluate your shoes. If you haven t purchased a new pair of running shoes since last summer, it is time to replace them. Even if you didn t run as much over the winter, shoes can still break down from sitting idle. Follow these tips and come speak with one of our health fitness professionals at the on-site 3M Fitness Center. They can help you find out more about how to make a smooth and safe transition.
