Special Risks red24 s Special Risks division provides prevention, risk mitigation and on-the-ground response services for Kidnap for Ransom and Extortion (KRE), piracy, wrongful detention, child abduction and stalking incidents. red24 not only helps Insureds achieve the possible release of the victim or resolution of the situation, we also provide risk management and pre- and post-incident consultancy. Our multilingual team of experts is ready to help you, your company and your employees 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our team has an unparalleled reputation for providing a comprehensive range of risk-management solutions, both to individuals wanting to protect themselves and their families and to companies wanting to minimise the risks to their personnel, operations, reputation and profitability. red24 s Special Risks team members are strategically placed throughout the world and have over 200 years of combined experience in response deployment. red24 has operating experience in over 120 countries worldwide and has the capability to physically support clients across the globe within 24 hours. The red24 Special Risks team is supported by red24 s 24/7 Crisis Response Management (CRM) Centre and its multilingual team of analysts and security experts. Kidnap for Ransom and Extortion (KRE), and its non-traditional variants, including express kidnapping and virtual kidnapping, pose a credible security threat to both recreational and business travellers in numerous areas of the world. The main KRE threats stem from criminally and/or politically motivated groups. Each kidnapping and extortion case is unique, and each one poses significant challenges for corporations and families alike. An experienced KRE response consultant can provide invaluable assistance in a time of crisis. Our priority will always be the safe return of the hostage, but as professionals, we also consider the safety and wellbeing of the victim s family and colleagues, their business reputation and their continued operational success. It isn t simply a function of paying a ransom. Jack Cloonan, Head of Special Risks Kidnap for Ransom and Extortion (KRE) Kidnap for Ransom and Extortion (KRE), its non-traditional variants, including express kidnapping and virtual kidnapping, have become an established threat in many areas of the world. The threat is significant and evolving, and can be attributed to political and economic instability, corruption, weak law enforcement and a lack of a central authority or state control. Organisations based and operating in these regions may be vulnerable to these criminal acts. 35% 30% 25% 20% 15% 10% 5% 0 Middle East and North Africa Sub-Saharan Africa Asia Americas Europe, Turkey, Russia and FSU As high-profile and wealthy individuals are becoming more security conscious and taking necessary safety precautions, kidnappers no longer limit their attention to wealthy families or business executives. Victims can include government officials, security forces, mid-level managers, middleclass families, project workers, ranchers, aid workers, business personnel and tourists. Prevention and risk mitigation can assist everyone in lowering their risks. Most kidnappings are motivated by financial gain, in the form of a ransom payment or concession. Annual kidnappings perpetrated for other reasons, such as human trafficking, marriage or forced labour, run into several hundred thousand incidents worldwide. 3

Operational Footprint Our operational footprint, through our network of crisis consultants, PR experts and forensic specialists. Key Special Risks and red24assist consultants In-country capabilities The Special Risks Team The team is led by former FBI Special Agent, Jack Cloonan, and comprises over 20 consultants based worldwide. It includes some of the highest-calibre kidnap and extortion experts in the world. With an average of over 15 years experience in the field each, our consultants have an indepth understanding of ransom and extortion negotiation tactics and how they differ across different cultures and continents. Members of the team speak a range of languages depending on their area of expertise, including English, Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Portuguese and Arabic. Crisis Response Management (CRM) Centre red24 maintains a 24/7 Crisis Response Management Centre (CRM) in Cape Town, South Africa. The CRM is our operations hub and is available 365 days a year to our clients and Insureds. It operates closely with our Special Risks and crisis consultant teams in order to ensure that the assistance and/or evacuation of affected individuals is fully supported around the clock. The CRM is staffed 24/7 by the Customer Service, Analyst and Crisis Support teams. Customer Services Analysts Crisis Support Front all calls and enquiries from clients, to consistently deliver the best service experience. Collate and analyse security intelligence. Monitor risks around the clock, and assess trends. Former police and military personnel, experienced in dealing with a range of emergencies and crises. red24 estimates that there are around 20,000 to 35,000 kidnappings for ransom annually. 4

red24 CRM Extended Services Consultation Our dedicated Special Risks team is retained and contracted to assist our clients and Insureds on KRE risk mitigation and response. They provide pre-incident briefings and consultation, designed to assist in reducing the risks while traveling, to clients, their staff and their families. Travel Safety Alerts Any significant safety, security or travel-related incident is immediately communicated to clients, keeping them informed about new and developing situations so that suitable precautionary action can be taken. red24 s team of analysts monitors developments across the globe on a 24/7 basis. Alerts cover incidents that have a direct bearing on traveller safety or are an indicator of a security risk, and range from terrorist incidents and kidnappings to civil unrest and major transport disruptions. Crisis management training Training takes the form of table-top crisis management scenarios that are tailored to the specific operational sector, risk profile and requirements of the client. These focus on situations that could potentially affect operations or employees. The scenarios allow the Insureds Crisis Management Team (CMT) to gain experience in dealing with a potential crisis, to test their crisis management plans, clarify roles and lines of communication and responsibility, and identify possible issues. Travel Safety Website The website is continually updated and provides country intelligence for over 240 countries and territories, and over 170 cities. Each profile includes a travel advisory, an overall risk rating, and a rating of the prevailing political, conflict, infrastructure, crime, terrorism and kidnapping risks. There is also extended information in the categories of Political Conditions, Security Issues, Travel Logistics, Cultural Factors, Travel Health, Useful Info and Contact details. Bespoke country reports Indepth KRE reports provide comprehensive analysis of a country or region s kidnapping and extortion environment. This provides information on statistical trends, primary perpetrators and their tactics, likely victims, ransom demands and settlements, lethality rates and incident durations. It also assesses the local law enforcement and regulatory environment from an insurance and negotiation perspective. These tend to be approximately 10-20 pages in length (dependent on requirements). Newsletters red24 puts out a quarterly KRE newsletter, the Global Monitor, keeping interested parties informed of global KRE developments. The publication, authored by red24 s Special Risks Analysts, provides clients with important information on recent kidnapping and piracy incidents, as well as current and emerging KRE trends. 5

70 percent of kidnappings may go unreported worldwide. It is estimated that the total value of ransoms paid worldwide is over US$500 million annually. How we will help in the event of an incident The following is an example. Although red24 s crisis management response models follow a structured process, each incident is unique and the dynamics may differ. In the event of an individual being kidnapped, extorted, wrongfully detained or affected by another incident, red24 will assess the initial information and then advise the corporation or family in determining the most appropriate course of action to bring about a successful resolution. A qualified red24 consultant will be deployed to the incident location and/or to the headquarters or home base of the victim, depending on the requirements of the case. They will assist the corporation or family in coordinating the response, providing best practice advice, scripting plans and advising corporate crisis management teams and spokespeople. The team will also assist in the release of the victim, ensuring that they are met at the agreed location, debriefed, and provided with any necessary requirements before being evacuated to their home or a place of safety. The consultants and the CRM Centre will maintain a dedicated and secure operations log throughout the case. red24 will liaise with the relevant individuals on a regular basis, providing them with necessary information and updates. The insured calls red24 s 24/7 Crisis Response Management Centre (CRM) on a dedicated Telephone Number. red24 s Crisis Support Team analyses the intake call and provides immediate advice and support. The red24 Special Risks Management Team (SRMT) considers the facts presented and contacts the insured. The SRMT confirms which Special Risks Consultant (if any) will be deployed to provide assistance. A secure case log is created. Coverage is verified with the insurance company. The red24 SRMT and CRM provide support to the consultant and insured throughout the crisis. Support includes logistical planning and analytical support, such as relevant information on trends, statistics and kidnappings in the region / country, and assisting in the creation of a Crisis Management Team (CMT) if required. The Consultant s objective is to work with the insured to gain the safe release of the victim(s) as quickly and safely as possible.
