BACKGROUND A SILVER TSUNAMI IS INVADING THE HEALTH OF NATIONS. Nations are forced to embrace a growing phenomenon where the ageing population is growing faster than the population at large due to declining fertility rates and enhanced longevity. According to the World Health Organisation, it is projected that 1 in 5 individuals would be 60 years or older by 2050. This phenomenon is also observed in Malaysia. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the data showed decreasing rates in fertility (from 6.7% (1957) to 2% (2015) of children per woman), declining death rates (from 12.4% (1957) to 5% (2015) per 1000 population) and remarkable increments in life expectancy due to improved access and quality of healthcare received (from 61.6 years (1957) to 74.7 (2016)). As the ageing population blooms in size, we face new challenges in empowering and caring for the aged. While breakthroughs in conventional medicine continue to impact us, the scientific community has also pursued numerous research studies and clinical trials to prove the effectiveness of traditional and complementary medicine (T&CM) in delivering safe and quality healthcare to the population. Studies have shown that T&CM is effective in strengthening the body s defence and healing abilities while encouraging a holistic approach towards good health practices, self-care and empowerment. There is much potential for T&CM to complement the provision of conventional healthcare and as such, the integration of T&CM into the national health care system could provide better care towards healthy ageing. This conference therefore aims to provide a suitable platform and opportunity for participants from various walks of life to explore an integrated approach towards healthy ageing in the era of the Silver Tsunami. OBJECTIVES To promote integrated approach and holistic management towards healthy ageing To empower the nation and community to take a more proactive role in healthy ageing To share knowledge and experiences on issues regarding integrated healthcare towards healthy ageing To provide networking opportunities between healthcare professionals, NGOs and government bodies with similar interest in the integrated approach towards health ageing
