Dear friends, This Sunday we will be discussing the Holy Trinity. We will recite the Nicene Creed, a creed developed in year 325 CE. This creed arose from political desires to have one unified faith that recognized one truth, capital T truth, and having declared this Truth, would end all bickering and division in the church. You all know this effort was doomed from the beginning right? It was, at the time, a political decision made to increase the unity of the Roman Empire under Constantine. Like most political figures, he wasn t really interested in theology, but he did have some pretty far out political goals and one of these was unity. Foundational to our faith is the affirmation that Jesus is Lord! and if Jesus is Lord, then Ceasar is not, nor any other political ruler since. Yet our faith is not nonpolitical. Our faith calls us out of our comfort and sends us into the world, into the city, into the margins. We are not called to have THE right answer, or own the Truth, but to witness to our faith in word and deed, to be the light that brightens the darkness, the hope that dispells despair, the love that heals, tends, and nurtures. What we do within the walls of the church changes how we live outside those walls. As we prepare to contemplate the Holy Trinity this Sunday, we are reminded that we are made in the image of a God who is, in and of God s very self, relational. We are created by a relational God, in relationship, for relationship. Our lives are not just about us! These theological creeds, crafted 1693 years ago, in the midst of political pressure, remind us that we are intrinsically connected to those around us. A Trinitarian understanding of who we are and whose we are reminds us that we are not autonomous but inextricably connected to those around us, the bright and shiny powerful people and the unseen, hurting marginalized people. Being a trinitarian people means that we recognize self-serving and self-promoting behaviors as harmful and foreign to the God we meet in scripture. Recognizing that we are in relationship with all of God s beloved children and that it can t be otherwise, shifts and redirects our behavior, our choices. It s much easier to just take care of myself and those like me, those I love. Being a trinitarian Christian insists that we seek the kingdom of God here on earth and work hard to bring it about, that all of God s beloved children will know and experience that kingdom. There are still powers in this world that seek to own the truth, that seek to assert their power and might as divinely ruled. There are political forces that wish to speak for the faith and assert themselves even at the expense of the most vulnerable among us. Our challenge today is to consider how we will respond faithfully. Will we learn to have those really difficult conversations? Will we seek to understand first and reply later? Will we acknowledge always that we are inextricably connected and resist the urge to serve our own best interest? Will we be known for our love and our courage? Our faithful witness is a foretaste of the Kingdom of God. We are called to witness to our faith in word and deed, to be the light that brightens the darkness, the hope that dispells despair, the love that heals, tends, and nurtures. We are ONE human family, created in God s very image, and if we let that into our hearts, it will change us, it will change everything! Grateful and humbled to be working wth you, Pastor Cyndi 3
