WHOI-OUC Cperative Research Initiative Awards The WHOI-OUC Cperative Research Initiative was established in June 2016 t prmte cllabratins in research and educatin. Activities under the Initiative are under the general supervisin f the Vice-President fr Research (VPR) at OUC (VPR-OUC) and WHOI (VPR- WHOI). Each institutin has designated a Science Advisry Grup (SAG) and a Crdinatr wh will prvide cmmunicatin within and between OUC and WHOI. WHOI s SAG cnsists f VPR and 5 Department Chairs. Jiayan Yang (WHOI) and Xiapei Lin (OUC) are the current crdinatrs. Awards frm the WHOI-OUC Cperative Research Initiative prvide funding t prmte research cllabratins between the Ocean University f China (OUC) and the Wds Hle Oceangraphic Institutin (WHOI) with an emphasis n pen cean and castal research. The tw institutins will use the WHOI-OUC Cperative Research Initiative t fund Cperative OUC-WHOI Research Prjects t prmte cllabratins between researchers at the tw institutins. Research Theme Fr the 2018 call the theme will be: Interactins between the deep cean and the castal regin in a changing climate. It includes physical, bilgical, chemical and gelgical aspects f interactins between the deep cean and the cast and their respnses t climate changes. There is n gegraphic restrictin n prpsed research, but the western Pacific Ocean has been the main area where mst f OUC s field wrk has been cnducted. WHOI PIs are encuraged t participate in current and future bservatinal prgrams in OUC and its develpments in bservatinal capability and technlgy. PIs are advised t cnsult the Crdinatrs (Jiayan Yang at WHOI and Xiapei Lin at OUC) abut these prgrams, r abut gegraphic r ther restrictins. Eligibility These awards are available t members f the Wds Hle Oceangraphic Institutin's Scientific Staff and Sr. Technical Staff wh plan t wrk with OUC cllabratrs n areas relevant t the theme f this slicitatin. Funding infrmatin WHOI-OUC Cperative Research Prpsals: Awards fr this prgram are up t $200,000. Awards can supprt WHOI principal investigatrs (PIs) with salary and assciated verhead csts, as well as apprpriate travel, supplies and services. WHOI PIs must be wrking with OUC cllabratrs. Separate funding fr OUC cllabratrs will cme frm OUC. Prgram funds are nt available fr develpment f new equipment. Budgets may nt include equipment, r subcntracts. Fr the 2018 call there is $1M available fr awards. Awards receive funds in tw increments. Award Criteria Each prpsal will be reviewed using these criteria: Primary criteria: Scientific and technical merit Relevance t the current theme Relevance t the gals f the Cperative Research Initiative Qualificatins f the PI and cllabratrs Feasibility f successful and timely cmpletin Secndary criteria: Availability f lgistical supprt, including ship time Ptential cnflict with exprt regulatins, security cncerns r ther restrictins Review Prcess Prpsals will be evaluated by the Science Advisry Cmmittee acting as a review panel. Other scientists can be added t the review panel as needed by VPs fr Research at OUC and WHOI. Any cnflicted Advisry Cmmittee members will be recused. The review panel will rank all prpsals based n the abve criteria, and make funding recmmendatins t the Vice Presidents fr Research at OUC and WHOI wh will make the final decisins jintly. Final Reprt Fr Research Prpsals, a brief interim reprt at the end f the first year and a final reprt at the end f the award perid are required. These prpsals are reviewed by an interdisciplinary team s it is best t avid jargn and lengthy technical narratives. Reviewers will be lking fr clear descriptins f yur questins and methds fr achieving the answers. Page limit f 5 pages fr the Cperative prpsals (excluding abstract) will be strictly enfrced. Prpsals must be legible. Fnt size shuld be a minimum f 12, and vertical spacing apprpriate fr the fnt size. Small type size makes it difficult fr reviewers t read the prpsal; cnsequently, small r type r cramped line spacing may be cause t return the prpsal withut review.
