LETTER FROM VICE PRESIDENT Dear Delegates, On behalf of Start Proud, I am delighted to welcome you to the 12th Out On Bay Street Conference! Bringing together the brightest students and professionals from across Canada, Out on Bay Street hopes to connect you with the organizations that want you to be you. Built upon the values of leadership and education, we challenge ourselves to create exceptional learning and networking opportunities for our delegates. We have shown that being a proud member the LGBTQ+ community, and having a fulfilling and successful career are not mutually exclusive. This year, we are thrilled to present truly inspiring keynote speakers, panelists and presenters who have not only achieved great success in their domains, but also remain proud members or supporters of our community. Of course, we cannot forgo a mention to our spectacular volunteers who are and always will be the heart of this organization. Devoting countless hours to ensure this event continues to be a success, they worked tirelessly to bring us everything we see today. I would also like to thank our generous sponsors, whose involvement is a true testament to the positive and important vision we are fostering. We take pride in helping to guide the next generation of young entrepreneurs and global business leaders. With that vision guiding us, Start Proud will continue to expand as a national and professional LGBTQ+ non-profit organization. Your success is a testament to the strength of our mission. COMPETITIONS Moot Court Competition The Moot Court competition gives law students the chance to improve their legal research, analysis, and advocacy skills by preparing a case for either the applicant or respondent in a case based on real-world scenarios. The competition will include submitting a written factum prior to the conference and arguing your case in front of a panel of judges composed of legal professionals from our corporate partner firms. This year the case will focus on the issue of surrogacy and the LGBTQ+ community in the family law context, specifically the enforcement of an oral contract and the changes to the legislation in this area in the All Families Are Equal Act, SO 2016 c. 23. The Challenge The goal of the Moot Case is to give law students at all stages in their education a chance to apply what they are learning in class to a real case. This means teams will be responsible for all aspects of preparing the case from research to argument. Sponsored by Case Competition Each year, we partner with an LGBTQ+ focused business or nonprofit organization to develop a multidisciplinary business case competition. The competition provides students an opportunity to apply what they have learned in school to a real life business case in front of a panel of judges comprised of executives from the partner company, Start Proud executives, and industry leaders. Our 2018 case partner is Interligne. They are a first response centre that provides help and information to all those concerned with sexual orientation and gender diversity, including allies, through phone and online services and resources. Their services are accessible 24 hours per day and focus issues such as providing support for sexual health and mental well-being. The Challenge Teams of three or four will work together to develop a strategic plan that addresses current issues an organization is facing, drawing from multitude of business areas. The specific case will be released one week prior to the conference. When the case is released, teams will race to research, draft, and present a plan to our panel of judges.
