The U.S. is set to raise its tariffs to 25 percent on $200 billion of Chinese imports on Jan. 1 from 10 percent currently. Trump has also threatened to impose tariffs on all Chinese imports unless U.S. demands are addressed. Spot gold may test a support at $1,211 per ounce, as it is peaking around a resistance at $1,231, according to Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao. CRUDE OIL: Oil prices plunged to their lowest since late 2017 on Friday in choppy trading, weighed down by an emerging crude supply overhang and a darkening economic outlook. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures slumped 2.3 percent, to $53.38 a barrel. Prices earlier fell to as low as $52.82, only 5 cents about the $52.77 level reached on Tuesday, which was the lowest since October 2017. The divergence between U.S. and international crude comes as surging North American supply is clogging the system and depressing prices there, while global markets are somewhat tighter, in part because of reduced exports from Iran due to newly imposed U.S. sanctions. U.S. EQUITIES: U.S. stock index futures pulled back ahead of Friday s open, as simmering trade war tensions added to worries about global economic growth. At around 4:30 a.m. ET, Dow futures were 82 points lower, indicating a negative open of more than 74 points. Futures on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq were also seen relatively downbeat Friday morning. U.S. and Chinese leaders are expected to meet at a G20 meeting in Argentina at the end of the month, though few economists expect the scheduled talks to resolve the trade dispute. On the data front, investors are likely to closely monitor a flash reading of Markit Services PMI data for November at around 9:45 a.m. ET. U.S. DOLLAR The dollar index, a gauge of its value versus six major peers, traded marginally lower at 96.46. Much of the weakness is due to the strength in the euro and sterling, which together constitute 70 percent of the index. The dollar has lost ground for two consecutive trading sessions and is drifting lower from a 16-month high of 97.69 hit earlier this month. The Fed is expected to deliver its fourth rate hike of 2018 in December, but markets are trying to gauge how much tighter can policy get next year without risking a slowdown in the domestic economy, which has so far held up well even as borrowing costs have risen. Commodities Corner Glossary of Terms Relative Strength Index (RSI): The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is a popular oscillator used by traders. The name "Relative Strength Index" is slightly misleading as the RSI does not compare the relative strength of two securities, but rather the internal strength of a single security. A more appropriate name might be "Internal Strength Index." The RSI is a fairly simple formula, but is difficult to explain without pages of examples. The Moving Average Convergence/Divergence indicator (MACD): is calculated by subtracting 26-period exponential moving average from 12-period exponential moving average. A 9-period dotted exponential moving average (the "signal line") is automatically displayed on top of the MACD indicator line. The Stochastic Oscillator: is based on stochastic mathematics. It compares where a security's price closed relative to its trading range over the last x-time periods. The Stochastic Oscillator always ranges between 0% and 100%. A reading of 0% shows that the security's close was the lowest price that the security has traded during the preceding x-time periods. A reading of 100% shows that the security's close was the highest price that the security has traded during the preceding x-time periods. The Stochastic Oscillator indicates an oversold state below 20% and an overbought state above 80%. Bollinger Bands: is a type of envelope developed by John Bollinger. Bollinger Bands are plotted at standard deviation levels above and below a moving average. The moving average generally taken is a 20-DMA, while the standard deviation count is 2. This is a very good to gauge both the general direction and the volatility. 5
