Second Quarter, 2017 President s Message TPA Summit Schedule at a Glance Wear Your Gameday Attire at TPA Summit Cost-Conscious Consumers Are Driving Health Care Transparency Become a Certified Self-Funding Specialist New CSFS designees Make Your Mark on an HCAA Committee Careers are Launching with HCAA Website Job Postings Save The Date for Executive Forum 2018 Get Social with HCAA President s Message By Steve Rasnick, HCAA President In a world that is characterized by change, I can attest to the fact that as you age (the alternative sucks), you are no longer able to do things that were easy when you were young. I can no longer dunk a basketball, and dribbling takes on a new meaning. However, certain things never change. Carl Reiner, the famous writer and director said that at age 92, his morning routine never changes. Each morning, when he awakens, he gets up, stretches, reads the Obituaries and if he does not see his name, he eats breakfast and moves on with the rest of his day. I have been a TPA for more than 40 years, and during that time nothing has been quite as constant as change. Yet, I have never read an accurate obituary about self-funding or TPAs, and our industry is growing and prospering, with the future very bright. Even with the birth of the ACA and whatever may follow, TPAs remain the little engine that could and have grown exponentially for those TPAs that could look beyond the naysayers and the doom and gloom. With each challenge, successful TPAs invent their own future and at our Executive Forum in February 2018, HCAA will build a program around how to Invent your Future. It will be another must attend conference! Notwithstanding the potential external threats to our business, I would submit that one of the biggest threats is internal. Too many of our leaders are my age, and there is a general lack of human capital and emerging leaders in our industry. Have you tried to hire a trained claims reviewer lately or an experienced manager or supervisor? Experienced people are simply not

routinely available, and there are not enough trained people available to support our industry growth. Some of our members are choking on new business, which makes no sense. HCAA is committed to not only highlighting the problem, but becoming the industry resource for the development of emerging leaders and their training. At the TPA Summit in St Louis, we will have more than 50 participants that have applied to our Emerging Leader Program, which will include a unique path for growth and development. At the forthcoming 2018 Executive Forum in Vegas, there will be a continued focus on developing human capital and a continuation of the Emerging Leaders Program. It is our hope that we will have 100 participating in Vegas. By participating, you are helping to invent your future. My thanks to Julie Wohlstein for her creativity and energy in building and managing this program for HCAA. She is helping invent our future! I am an eternal optimist about our industry and its future, but I am a realist as to what it takes to be successful. Good things happen to good people, but better things happen to people that work hard, are creative and innovative, and have the ability to make lemonade out of potential lemons. Hope is not an effective business strategy, and one of my goals as President of HCAA is to have HCAA become the incubator for new and innovative ideas, as well as the go to place for the education and training of the human capital that is so important to the success of our industry. TPA Summit Schedule at a Glance The 2017 TPA Summit is right around the corner it s not too late to join us for this incredible event in a few weeks. Be sure to not miss out on the exciting slate of educational, networking and fun we have planned. Register and make your hotel reservations today on our website.

Wear Your Gameday Attire at TPA Summit On July 18, the full Tuesday of the HCAA conference, we ll be ditching our business attire and enjoying the day in chill style. Be sure to pack your favorite sports team s jersey or your favorite t-shirt! Or are you prepared to celebrate the day as a local? Don the colors of the St. Louis Cardinals! One thing we can promise you: this year s TPA Summit will be like no other! After the compelling, informative self-funding educational sessions, be ready for some fun with music, parties, networking events and more! We can t wait to see you there! Cost-Conscious Consumers Are Driving Health Care Transparency Born out of necessity, a new breed of health care consumers is demanding transparency about the true price of office visits, lab tests, procedures, prescriptions and hospitalizations. Clinicians and billing staff should be paying close attention to this trend and working with patients who are balancing the cost of care with its effectiveness. See Steve Rasnick s full article Cost-Conscious Consumers Are Driving Health Care Transparency in Future of Health Care News.

Become a Certified Self-Funding Specialist See our latest video with Carol Berry, CSFS, Chief Executive Officer of the Health Care Administrators Association as she describes how the Certified Self-Funding Specialist (CSFS) program has become an industry standard. New CSFS Designees Congratulations to the latest round-up of dedicated individuals who have shown a commitment to serving self-funded health care plans! Make Your Mark on an HCAA Committee HCAA relies on the great work of volunteers to help us achieve our goals and continue to support the self-funding Industry. Working on a committee or a task force is a great way to meet others in the association while giving back to help our association continue to grow. Below is a list of the current committees and task forces. Conference Planning Task Forces There are two task forces: Executive Forum Task Force and the TPA Summit Task Force. Each task force is responsible for creating the themes of the conferences, identifying topics and speakers, and approving presentation content. The task forces will support HCAA staff as needed in the planning of conference logistics. Membership Committee This committee is responsible for assisting with the recruitment and retention of HCAA members. Duties include developing member benefits, making recommendations for changes and/or new benefits as opportunities arise, and participating in membership drives and campaigns. Sponsorship Committee This Committee is responsible for evaluating the annual sponsorship campaign and making recommendations to the Board, as needed. This Committee assists in finding and securing sponsors for annual corporate sponsorships and the individual conference sponsorships. The Committee works closely with HCAA staff to ensure that items that are being sponsored are appropriate and affordable. For more information on the committees and the ways in which you can become involved, visit the Committee Signup page of our website or contact hcaainfo@hcaa.org with any questions. Subject Matter Connectors Consistent with HCAA s focus on the Value of Connection, HCAA has developed a cadre of experts, known as Subject Matter Connectors, that are available to engage with HCAA members to help with specific questions or to provide suggestions when a member requires direction, based on topics inherent to third party administrators and benefit administrative services. Subject Matter Connector Leads, which consist of members of the HCAA Board of Directors, have built connector teams through the identification of individual HCAA members that have extensive experience and knowledge in an area. The Leads can direct members to Affiliate or TPA resources within the HCAA membership that can provide more extensive expertise. This program is designed to give guidance and suggestions, but not to replace expert counsel. If you would like to be Connected to one of our leads or become a Subject Matter Connector yourself, please contact hcaainfo@hcaa.org.

Careers are Launching with HCAA Website Job Postings Many of you have used the job postings on our website as a resource for posting your organization s open positions. We d like to remind everyone of this valuable member benefit so even more can take advantage. And of course, if you re looking for your next career move in the self-funding industry, our job board is a great place to leverage your connections. If you would like to post your organization s job opening to the HCAA website, visit the Job Posting page where you can also view open positions. Save the Date for Executive Forum 2018 HCAA s 2018 Executive Forum, Take Charge of Your Future: Invent It! will be held February 5-7, 2018. This membership-only annual conference for the self-funding industry, held in Las Vegas, offers a program covering strategic ideas focused toward third party and benefit administrator executive leadership. The conference, attended each year by over 400 industry leaders, provides critical points of view, often disruptive, which are meant to challenge and to provoke thought, while providing education for all attendees. Our conference program is in the planning stage. Look to this website for updates on speakers and sessions. More information, including dates for conference and hotel registration openings, will follow. Please watch for our announcements! We hope to see you in Las Vegas in February!
