.0 Project title: Build school toilets for 1000 pupils in Malawi 2.0 Project summary. This project will assist about 100 children to complete primary education annually at Mtende Primary school in Mzimba district in Northern Malawi by providing better learning environment through construction of improved permanent toilets. Due to inadequate toilets and their poor condition, absenteeism among girls is very high mainly when they reach puberty and majority drop-out of school before completing primary education. Construction of permanent toilets through this project will increase interest of most children to remain in school. 3.0 Brief history of the organisation Action for Sustainable Development (ASUD) is a local non-profit and non-political nongovernmental organization in Malawi formed in 2009 and was legally registered as a local Nongovernmental Organization (NGO) with the office of the Malawi s Registrar General under the Trustees Incorporation Act on 2 nd August, 2013. The organization was formed to protect and conserve environment in rural communities, improve food security and nutrition among vulnerable communities, enable vulnerable households become economically empowered and reduce the impact and spread of HIV/AIDS. ASUD is a member of Council for Nongovernmental Organizations in Malawi (CONGOMA), Coordination Union for the Rehabilitation of the Environment (CURE) Malawi Scotland Partnership and Global Environment Facilty Civil Society Organization (GEF CSO) Network. Its mission is to combat hunger, environmental degradation and mitigate the impacts of HIV/AIDS. Its main areas of focus are HIV/AIDS, food security and nutrition, environment, income generating activities, water and infrastructure development. Its head office is in the City of Mzuzu and meanwhile, it is implementing its activities in Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba district in Northern Malawi. Since its inception in 2009, ASUD has been implementing several projects with self help funds and also from the donors. Major donors are Malawi Environmental Endowment Trust (MEET) and Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme through United Nations Development Programme (GEF/SGP/UNDP). Page 2 of 8

.0 Background of the school Mtende Primary School is one of the public schools in Malawi and it is directly managed by the Ministry of Education. The school is situated in a typical rural area in Parango village in Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba district in the Northern Region of the country where development is still very poor. The school is about 20 km away from Mzuzu City and was established in 2004. It has classes from standard 1 to 8 with 2 permanent double classroom school blocks, one temporally double classroom school block, one temporally administration office, four teachers houses, one kitchen, one teachers temporally toilet, one girls temporary toilet, one boys temporally toilet and one temporally boys urinal. 5.0 Problem statement Poor hygiene and sanitation is one of the most critical problems at Mtende Primary School. At present the school use temporally toilets that are grass roofed with mud floor. At present, over 200 pupils share one toilet. As such, the floors are usually wet, dirty and undesirable to use and the situation become worse during rainy season. This puts children under a great risk of diarrhea infections. This influence high absenteeism and school drop-outs among pupils. At present, the neighboring schools with better facilities are almost 8 km away from this community. Currently, the area has no organizations that have indicated interest to rescue the children from this pathetic situation. It is against this background that Action for Sustainable Development (ASUD) is seeking financial support from various supporters through Global Giving UK to construct improved permanent toilets to keep the children in school and enable them to proceed with their education. 6.0 Programme description 6.1 Goal To contribute towards improvement of education in Malawi through provision of better sanitary facilities in primary schools. Page 3 of 8

.2 Project objectives To reduce toilet pupil ratio at Mtende Primary School to 60% and above by December 2016. To reduce absenteeism of pupils in school by December 2016. To increase number of pupils completing primary education by December 2016. 6.3 Expected outputs The toilet pupil ratio at Mtende Primary School reduced by 60% and above by December 2016. Absenteeism of pupils in rural primary schools reduced by December 2016. Number of pupils completing primary education increased by December 2016 6.4 Activities The project will involve:- Formation of the project management committee that will be responsible for checking quality of work and timing of the project implementation. Construction of one boy s toilet and one girl s toilet. 7.0 Project Management ASUD will be responsible for all day to day activities, record keeping and progress reporting of the project to the donor. The ASUD Executive Director will be the overall leader of the project who will ensure that all activities are implemented according to the toilets design and that the quality of work is satisfactory. 8.0 Stakeholders that will be involved in project activities 8.1 District Education Office in Mzuzu This office is the custodian of the primary school and will be involved in mobilizing the school to participate fully in the project. Page 4 of 8

.2 Parents Teachers Association (PTA) They will be responsible for mobilizing pupils to use the facilities properly and enhance Project Management Committee to carryout maintenance of the project facilities when necessary. 9.0 Target beneficiaries The project will benefit over 1000 primary school going children as direct beneficiaries annually. 10.0 Gender Mainstreaming The project will ensure that formation of the Project Management Committee has equal representations between men and women. 11.0 Risks and assumptions The major risks of this project will include heavy winds that might damage the roofs of the toilets after project completion. The increase in price of the project materials while the project will be progressing will also become a risk as this will disturb the project budget. The risk caused by winds will be will alleviated by planting trees around the schools while the one caused by inflation will be sorted out by adding contingency in the budget. The assumptions include good participation of the community in the project and that funds the project implementation will be made available. 12.0 Monitoring and evaluation Monitoring of this project will be based on the implementation schedule. Therefore project monitoring will ensure that time frame and construction standards are followed. The impact of the project in relation to objectives will be assessed by looking at reduction on pupil absenteeism. There will be one participatory evaluation at the end of the project as it will be arranged between the donor and ASUD. The lessons learnt from this project will be used for planning for scaling up of the similar project to other schools. 13.0 Community contribution to the project The school will contribute bricks for this project. Page 5 of 8

.0 Financial issues ASUD will provide both narrative and financial reports as per requirement of the donor while books of accounts will be open for inspection to both the donor and the organization s Board of Trustees. An audit will be undertaken at the end of the project. Page 6 of 8
