2 Executive Summary In April of 2014, GPA conducted a compensation survey of grant professionals who serve as consultants. The survey distributed online through SurveyMonkey to all active GPA members and our mailing list of non-members via ; seventy-four (74) responses were received. This is the third annual consultant survey done by GPA. The 2014 survey was based on questions from last year s consultant survey. A strong response rate provides answers to the question, Who is a Typical Consultant? Earns $67, per year as a full-time consultant and $65.15 per hour as a parttime consultant. Feels very well (34.5%) or fairly (62.1%) compensated for the work s/he performs. Writes between 1 and 20 grant proposals a year. States that s/he has a funding success rate of 51-75%. Female (85.3%), between 56 and 60 years old (17.6%), and White/Non-Hispanic (77%). Holds a Bachelor s Degree (33.8%) in Business Administration (14.7%), Political Science (8.8%) or Psychology (17.6%). Holds a Graduate or Professional Degree (58.1%). Works in an urban area (57.7%). Has been in the grants field for years (23.9%) and considers him or herself advanced with regard to skill level (78.9%). Works as a consultant for a variety of organizations. Has a business that is considered small (94.4%) with 0-5 employees (90.1%), an annual operating budget of under $50,000 (57.7%), and is considered a relatively established business (35.2%). Has an average of 1-10 clients (87%) and an ongoing contract length (47.9%). Concentrates on writing proposals to private foundations (35.65%), the Federal government (28.65%), and state governments (11.38%). i
3 Additional key finding include: Most grant consultants reported having a higher (27.3%) or a much higher (15.2%) income as grant professional consultants than as employees. While there was a difference in salary by race in the full-time consultant findings ($92,500 Asian, $87,500 Black or African-American/Non-Hispanic, and $64, White/Non-Hispanic), it is noted that there were only one Asian and Black or African-American/ Non-Hispanic survey respondents, compared to 21 White/Non-Hispanic respondents. There are strong positive correlations between salary and years of experience, skill level, size of business, and degree of establishment of business. There are no apparent correlations between salary and an individual s proposal success rate. There are no apparent correlations between success rate and skill level or success rate by size or business. There are no apparent correlations between proposal success rates and years in the grants field. ii

Of the 65 respondents two answered N/A. The below average percentage was figured from the remaining 63 respondents. The average percentage was 28.65%. Question 48: What percentage of funding proposals you write are to corporations? Respondents were asked to select from a list of ranges that included N/A, 0%, 100% and five point ranges in between (i.e., 1-10%, 11-20% and so on). The average percentage was calculated by taking the mid-point of the range (i.e., 1-10% treated as 5.5%, 11-20% as 15.5% and so on). 65 respondents submitted an answer. Of the 65 respondents two answered N/A. The below average percentage was figured from the remaining 63 respondents. The average percentage was 9.48%. Question 49: WE'LL LISTEN! Your suggestions after the 2013 survey helped us improve the 2014 survey with new questions about demographics, education, and more! Did we miss anything this time? What would you have liked to know about grant professionals' salaries and demographics that will not be captured in the survey questions? (Note: to protect your anonymity, please do not include your name or identifying information in your response.) 14 respondents provided free response answers to this question. The table below addresses some of these comments. # of Comments Nature of Comment Response 1 What percentage of your work was pro-bono? This suggestion will be taken into consideration for the 2015 Salary Survey. 1 You asked how much salary I pay myself and wouldn t allow an N/A. I do not draw a salary. I keep all the profits after expenses 1 The percentage ranges were pretty wide when it came to the questions about percentage of grants funded. I think a more narrow range would yield more useful data. 2 add unknown as a response to # grants written, grants funded, etc. 4 I think this is a wonderful survey for your organization. Keep up the good work! I am glad to become a part of such a group of professionals. Look for this addition to be on the 2015 Salary Survey! This suggestion will be taken into consideration for the 2015 Salary Survey. This suggestion will be taken into consideration for the 2014 Salary Survey. You are very welcome! We are happy to provide this survey to our members. Thank you for taking time out of your schedules to complete it. 16

46 Comparison of Key Findings from 2013 to 2014 Average Salary and Sex In 2013, the average salary of full-time male consultants was $56, Full-time Female consultants came in with an average salary of $65, In 2014, the survey shows a significant increase in the average salary of males to $66, and an increase of over $3000 in the average salary of female consultants to $68, Note that the number of male respondents increased from two to eight and female respondents from remained the same at twenty. In 2013, the average hourly rate for a part-time male consultant was $ A full-time female consultant was $ In 2014, male consultants remained steady at $50.00 and females showed an increase to $ Note that the number of male respondents decreased from four to three. The number of female respondents increased by ten from 25 to 35. Salary by Skill Level and Years in Profession In 2014, there seems to be a direct positive correlation by skill level and average salary in our part-time consultants but not the full-time. The same cannot be said of years in the profession. This seems to vary but again our response rate was low so that may have affected the results. Salary by Skill Level Full-time Consultants Response Category Average in 2013 Average in 2014 Beginner N/A N/A Intermediate $47, $71, Advanced $67, $67, Salary by Skill Level Part-time Consultants Response Category Average in 2013 Average in 2014 Beginner N/A N/A Intermediate $47.45 $46.05 Advanced $62.28 $

Removing them would make the top state Ohio with an average salary of $82,250, second would be New York with an average salary of $80,000 and third, Indiana with an average salary of $65,000. In 2014, the District of Columbia and Indiana had the highest average salary at $100,001. Again, these states only had one respondent so the results are slightly skewed. Removing them would make the top state Pennsylvania with an average salary of $83,750.50, second would be New York with an average salary of $78, and third, Ohio with an average salary of $76, The states with the lowest salaries in 2013 were New Jersey ($62,500) and California ($52,500). In 2014, Missouri ($44,167), New Jersey ($47,500), and Minnesota (60,000) had the lowest salaries of those with more than one respondent. Those who worked in the West ($92,500) and New England ($92,500) areas came in at the highest paid, however, these each only had one respondent. Disregarding those, the highest paid area was the Northeast with an average of $80, followed by those that work in more than one region with an average of$67, Compared to 2013, those 38
48 who worked in more than one region came in as the highest paid region with an average of $67,917 with the Midwest second with an average salary of $67,917 (of those with more than one response). The Midwest Region was the lowest paid ($61,562.63) fulltime consultants. Salary by Region, and Type of Area Part-time Consultants In 2013, the Northeast Region had the best hourly pay for part-time consultants with an average of $ The Midwest came in second with an average of $63.10 and those who worked in more than one region came in third with an average of $ In 2014, the Northeast Region remained on top with an average of $ Those that work in more than one region were second with an average of $79.17 and the Midwest was third with an average of $ These results are based on those who had more than one respondent. In 2013, the data showed that those that work in the urban area ($63.18) made almost $10 more per hour than suburban ($55.33) or rural ($54.50) consultants. However, in 2014, those that work in a suburban area ($77.23) made quite a bit more than those in an urban ($61.49) or rural area (52.14). However, looking at the number our urban and rural responses from 2013 to 2014 are quite similar whereas we had quite a jump in the number of responses for the suburban area. 39
