ROOM SELECTION & HOUSING LOTTERY 2018 Information Sessions
WHAT IS ROOM SELECTION? Room Selection Housing Lottery Room Selection includes: Barnard Housing Lottery CU Housing Lottery (rising-seniors only) RAs and RA Pull-Ins Pre-Lottery Disability Housing Accommodations & Pull-ins CU Greek & Special Interest Communities Any guaranteed housing placement for the next academic year
WHAT IS THE HOUSING LOTTERY? Way that most students will participate Selecting rooms for next academic year Time Slots to pick ordered by Class Year seniority (Seniors first, Sophomores last) Guarantee of housing, but not every student may be apply to pick a specific room Some will need to sign up for the Guaranteed Assignment List for placement over summer
REGISTRATION FOR ROOM SELECTION On Portal between 1pm, Wed, Feb 28 and 1pm, Wed, Mar 7 When you register does not affect Lottery Number -- but don t miss the deadline! If you do not register, you will lose your guarantee of housing for next year Can still continue to form groups after registration deadline
DECLARING A CATEGORY When you register, you will tell us if you are taking part in the Lottery or if you re an RA or RA pull-in, or got a disability placement or are an ODS pull-in or will be in CU Greek or SIC housing Rising-seniors only may also register for CU Lottery
STAGES OF THE LOTTERY Stage Who What 4 Lottery 4-person Groups Picking 4-person Suites only 5 Lottery 5-person Groups Picking 5-person Suites only 6 Lottery 6-person Groups Picking 6-person Suites only 1 / 2 / 3 Lottery Individuals and 2/3-person Groups Picking Corridor-style rooms & remaining Suite-style rooms
4 / 5 / 6 LOTTERIES (ENTIRE SUITES) Only pick empty suite that matches group size (4-person Group can t pick 5-person suite) Your group will share a Lottery Number & Time Slot for the Lottery Stage Different deadlines to form groups (see handout) Cannot alter the group after deadline for each stage (but can alter for later stage)
4 / 5 / 6 LOTTERIES (ENTIRE SUITES) If your group does not pick during a stage, you can reform as a larger group (by the deadline) for a later stage Ex. a 4-person group that doesn t pick can become a 5- or 6-person Group (or split up for the 1/2/3 Lottery)
1 / 2 / 3 LOTTERY Ordered by class year seniority, not by group size or if you are in a group Groups would share Lottery Number & Time Slot (and function just like an individual) Cannot form or change groups after deadline for this stage If you don t pick during the 1/2/3 Lottery, you will sign up for Guaranteed Assignment List
1 / 2 / 3 LOTTERY Must fill any room you pick Individuals can pick singles or Studio Singles (but not into half of a double or triple) Group of 2 can pick 2 singles or 1 double Group of 3 can pick 3 singles, 1 double & 1 single, or 1 triple Do not have to pick on same floor or building Encouraged to form 2-person Groups! (especially rising-sophomores)
FORMING GROUPS Similar to the FY Housing Application roommate requests or old Lottery system One person will CREATE a group on the Portal and choose NAME & PASSCODE Other student(s) will JOIN the group and enter the NAME & PASSCODE
FORMING GROUPS Groups must be formed by the deadlines on the handout After each deadline, groups are locked and cannot be changed If you do not pick during a stage, your group will be unlocked to make changes Any 4, 5, & 6-person groups will be deleted after the 6 Lottery (have to form new 2 or 3-person groups)
FORMING GROUPS Looking for other students to pick with? Check out the Search for Roommates post on the Res Life Facebook page
GROUPS WITH CU STUDENTS CU students eligible for CU Lottery can register & join Barnard groups Groups must be 50% or more BC Groups with CU students can only pick into suites (not Hewitt, Elliott, Sulz Tower) Groups with CU students who identify as male may only pick entire suites (not partial) CU Students can t pick as individuals & can t pick Studio Singles in 1/2/3 Lottery
WHEN DO YOU PICK? Based on Class Year Seniority (Seniors, then Juniors, then Sophomores) Lottery numbers will be generated randomly within class years The order of Lottery Number determines the order of Time Slots to pick rooms on the Portal
LOTTERY NUMBERS Groups will share one Lottery Number New Lottery Numbers for each stage (group that didn t pick during 4-Lottery and then reforms a 5-person Group will get a completely new Lottery Number for 5-Lottery) 1/2/3 Lottery Numbers are by class year, not by size (i.e. Groups are treated same as individuals)
GROUP POINT AVERAGE GROUP POINT AVERAGE to determine their seniority for Lottery Numbers = total points divided by # of students Rising-Seniors Rising-Juniors = 300 points each = 200 points each Rising-Sophomores = 100 points each Groups of all Seniors has an average of 300 points, etc.
MIXED CLASS YEAR GROUPS 3 Seniors & 2 Juniors = 260 points ( is 1300/5 = 260) 260 points group comes after 300 point groups and before 200 point groups Any mixed-groups with Sophomores will automatically come after Junior-only groups (group with 3 Seniors + 1 Sophomore would pick after Juniors pick, but before Sophomore-only groups pick)
TIME SLOTS Lottery Numbers determine order of Time Slots (i.e. when you pick) Start times are spaced approximately 5 minutes apart Time Slots last for 30 minutes after start If you do not pick during your Time Slot, you will have to take part in a later stage (or sign up for Guaranteed Assignment List)
TIME SLOTS Time Slot start times are spaced approximately 5 minutes apart. Time 9:00 #1 9:05 #2 9:10 #3 9:15 #4 9:20 #5 9:25 #6 9:30 9:35 9:40 9:45 9:50
WHAT CAN YOU PICK? List of possible spaces & configurations on Barnard website Look at PDF Floorplans During Spring Break, a live list will be posted (which updates every ~5 minutes when each Lottery is taking place) Can check live list as your Time Slot approaches to see what is still available
ROOM PRICES & MEAL PLANS New for Singles & Multiples will be the same price Studio Singles will still cost more (talk to your family or Fin Aid before picking one!) 23 HOW / WHERE DO YOU PICK? Will pick online via the Barnard Housing Portal during your Time Slot May come to Res Life office in Sulzberger for in-person assistance during your Time Slot if you d like (bring a laptop if possible!)

WHAT IF I CAN T PICK? When rooms run out, remaining students will sign up for the GUARANTEED ASSIGNMENT LIST (100~150 students) Or, if you don t want to pick from what s available during your Time Slot You are guaranteed a room!
GUARANTEED ASSIGNMENT LIST Assignments made over summer to rooms where other students cancelled Follows 1/2/3 Lottery Number order Placements will be ED to students in late July
AFTER YOU PICK A SPACE All selections are FINAL (no changes) You may not drop from a group that picked or join another group to pick after you have made a selection First opportunity for ROOM CHANGES will be early Fall (rising-seniors only may request room changes over summer) Room SWAPS (between 2 people) will be available May June 22
