Round to the nearest pound Q. 3-2 x 5 Budgeting A budget is a plan for money that consists of income and outgoings (expenditure). Make a list of income and outgoings, get the total for each and see if you have a surplus or a deficit. Budgets are used in households, businesses and event planning. It is important to create a budget so you are prepared and don't run out of money. Household Budgeting - Income Income is money that comes in. Examples of income: Wage/Salary - This is income from your job. Benefits - Jobseekers' allowance, Child benefit, Family tax credits etc. Bonus - Extra payment from a job. Pension - What you earn if you are retired. Gifts Household Budgeting - Outgoings (Expenditure) Examples: Rent or Mortgage. Utilities - Electricity & Gas Council Tax Internet and/or TV Food Numeracy Practice Non-Calculator Q Q Q Q6. Write 15minutes as a Q3. Find 80% of 300 decimal of hours Q4. Round to 1 decimal place Q Clothes Insurance - Buildings & Contents, Life, Car, Pet etc. Phone
2 Budgeting Task: 1. Look for a job that you are interested in in Edinburgh. - Note the salary: If it is per year, deduct 25% for taxes etc. and work out the monthly salary. Starter Edinburgh Johannesburg Hong Kong Sydney - Note the location of the job. 2. Find a one bedroom flat to rent in Edinburgh near your place of work - Note the cost of rent. What time will it be in each of these places when it is 13:30 in Edinburgh? - Note the council tax band. 3. Cost of transport Work out how much transport would cost to get to your work from your flat. Is it walking distance? Today we will be continuing to learn about budgeting. 4. Create a budget with your income and your expenses. Rent and council tax ahould come first. Estimate the monthly cost of the following: Food, Clothes, Utilities, Insurance, TV license, Socialising Household Budgeting - Creating a budget Income: 1720 Rent: 650pcm Council Tax: 160pm Event Planning - Creating a budget Income Expenditure Planning a holiday- How much should you budget? 3 Starter Today we will be completing questions from the book on budgeting. Starter Starter Work out the percentages of each amount (non-calculator) (a) Jenny works Monday to Friday from 06:30 to 15:30. She earns 5.80 per hour. She gets an hour break each day unpaid. How much does she earn for a week? 20% 2.5% 1% 50% % 25% 300 5% 90% 20% 2.5% 1% 50% % 25% 50 5% 90% (b) Jenny lives at home and spends money in the following ways: Phone 40 per month Food 35 per week Bus 52 per month Socialising 32 per week How much money will Jenny have left at the end of a month? At the end of a time period e.g. every week or month, you will be paid for the work you have done. Today we will be learning about wages and overtime. If you are paid a salary - you are usually paid monthly and it is the same each month (Your salary ) For example: Karen's salary is per year. How much does she earn per month?
4 If you are paid a wage. This means you are paid per hour. Example: David earns 6.50 per hour and works 35 hours this week. How much does he earn? The table below shoes the current National Living & Minimum Wage. Overtime: This is money that you earn for working outwith normal hours. It is paid at a higher rate than your normal rate of pay. Some examples include: Time and a half Double time Time and a third. Overtime Examples: 1. Dave earns 7.20 per hour. He works 35 Normal Hours and 9 hours at time and a half. How much does he earn in total? Starter Use a calculator to work out the following: Q1. The cost of a television is % VAT, how much does it cost in total? 2. Claire earns 15 per hour. She works 150 hours this month and has worked 9 hours overtime at time and a third. How much does she earn in total? Q2. James earns 2300 per month. He gets a payrise of 1.3%, how much does he earn per month now? Q3. Yvonne earns 6.80 per hour, how much does she get paid for 42 hours work, of which are overtime paid at time and a half? Commission This is money that you can earn instead of or on top of your wages. Today we will be continuing to learn about earnings. It is usually paid as a percentage of what you have sold in sales jobs and is an incentive for employees to sell more e.g. car sales or phone sales Example: Kathy sells worth of cars over a month. She gets paid commission at a rate of 1.5% of sales. How much does she earn in commission?
5 A payslip is a summary of what you get paid and the deductions made. You should get one each time you get paid. Gross pay: This is your total pay before deductions. Net Pay: This is your pay after deductions (also called take home pay) Starter Q1. John earns 1540 per month. He gets paid a commission of 1.4% of sales. This month he made of sales. How much does he earn in total? Q2. Kesley wants to save for a holiday that costs 680. If the holiday is 8 months away, how much should she save each month? Deductions: Deductions are amounts that come off your pay. Some are mandatory and some are optional. Paying Tax Examples: How much tax does each person pay? (a) Jim earns p.a. Mandatory deductions: Tax - % of income over a certain amount = 0% Tax = 20% Tax = 40% Tax Over = 45% Tax (b) Caroline earns p.a. (b) Kerry earns p.a.
