9 Finding Mark Ups Mark Up: The amount a store an item in order to make a profit. Ex1. If a store buys a book for $8 but sells it for $14, then the mark up amount is. Percent of Mark Up: The amount written as a percent (same as percent of change). Ex2. A clothing store pays $56 for a coat and then sells the coat with a 45% markup. a). 11 Simple Interest Interest a payment for the use of money. Three things determine interest: Principal money that you borrow or loan Rate percent all percents must be changed to decimals Time must be converted to years Formula: I = PRT (Interest equals Principal times Rate times Time) Ex. 1 Find the interest if you borrow $5,000 at 9% for three years. I = PRT I = ( )( )( ) I = Ex. 2 Find the interest of an $1,800 investment at 7.5% for two years. Ex. 3 Find the total amount of the investment from #2. Ex. 4 You invest $750 at 12% for 6 months.
