2 Introduction Children s Development Khazana (CDK) works in the slums of Mumbai to support street children in their livelihoods by providing them with a simple but solid system to manage their financial lives. The children do not make much money, but the foundation gives them the opportunity to manage themselves what they do have and supports them to go to school. Many of these children live in the streets, sleep under bridges and eat what they find in rubbish bins. They are often unregistered and their chances to break this cycle of poverty are limited. CDK is an initiative which aims for children to manage their own money through a number of bank branches where these same children manage the books and their peers get to save small quantities of cash. With the savings account comes, for example, the promise to go to school. This results in small steps towards social change for the children involved and their families. Stichting Children s Khazana Foundation (or Khazana Foundation) is an independent organization which supports Children s Development Khazana (or Khazana) to teach children life skills through financial management.

3 Mission and Vision of Khazana Foundation In the Netherlands, the Khazana Foundation aims to support the Children s Development Khazana (CD Khazana) in Mumbai, India, so as to have a positive impact on the lives and futures of children members of the Khazana and their families. The Khazana Foundation believes this bottom-up approach will make a difference in Indian society and as such the future of low-income groups in the country. In India the Khazana Foundation supports CD Khazana in Mumbai through the financial support of operational expenses and content-driven discussions on the activities and possible growth in Mumbai. India India has many challenges that it has yet to fully address, including poverty, corruption, violence and discrimination against women and girls, an inefficient power generation and distribution system, [ ] inadequate availability of quality basic and higher education, and accommodating rural-to-urban migration.* * CIA World Factbook

4 2016 activities in Mumbai By the end of 2016, Children s Development Khazana counted 351 active accounts. 224 of the accounts are held by boys and 127 by girls. By the end of March 2017 (which is the end of the financial year in India which runs April- March) children had saved a total of Rs. 118, 659/- or (1, Euro). Every 6 months the different branches elect their branch manager. This is the person who, guided by social workers, manages a CDK branch for six months. Children follow a democratic process in which those who want be elected branch manager write a manifesto and present it to rest of the children. After the election, trainings given to the newly elected managers project staff on topics such as building their confidence level, managing the cash book and ledger book, maintenance of documents, and other necessary skills to manage a branch. Furthermore, the Mumbai CDK was represented at the annual CDK workshop in Delhi. The core theme of the CDK workshop was Entrepreneurship. Five children from the program in Mumbai joined the social workers that support them in Delhi to discuss with colleagues from around the country. 5 2016 activities in Mumbai Several workshops and visits were organized for all children saving with CDK, such as an official computer course, a visit to a national bank, medical camps which focus on common issues like the flue and more serious diseases such as Dengue. To focus specifically on financial life-skills, a visit to Canara Bank in Mumbai cantral was organized. 40 children from all CDK branches attended the visit. Bank branch manager, Mr. Sandesh, introduced his work to the children which included an explanation of types of accounts, the importance of a safe banking environment, and roles and responsibilities of the staff. He also made the parallel CDK and how it compares to Canara Bank.

6 2016 activities in the Netherlands In 2016 we built on the professionalization and structure created in Furthermore several members of the board visited Mumbai and a fundraising event was held in December. - A monthly skype meeting ensures adequate control and support to CDK in Mumbai; - In December a department at ABN AMRO organized a charity auction during the annual Christmas drinks. Together, the teams raised EUR which benefited the activities in Mumbai. - General donations in 2016 raised over EUR 12,000.- Christmas Auction 2016 Multiple unique experiences provided by ABN AMRO employees were auctioned to raise money for the Children s Khazana Foundation. Think of a great sailing trip with a unique captain, an Indonesian Rijsttafel cooked by an experienced colleague, a weekend getaway in an original farmhouse etc. The auction was well received by ABN AMRO staff and successful in raising money for the Khazana.

7 Visit by the board to Mumbai In November 2016, our board member Pauline Engelberts visited CDK in Mumbai to meet the organisation and hear the experiences from a number of the children who are saving through CDK in person. She shares her experiences: The personal stories of children setting long term goals, learning to balance their short term needs against longer term ambitions, was inspiring. The social workers explained how their account management worked and how they were training children to keep rudimentary accounting books. They also explained how the children were assured that the money would always be attributed to them through their personal identification numbers, even if they were to move outside of Mumbai. CDK illustrated that it is an organisation which promotes a safe environment for children, provides financial inclusion for minors and prepares them for the financial banking system once they turn 18 years old.

10 About Khazana Foundation in the Netherlands Stichting Children s Khazana Foundation does not pay any of it s board members or other people active to raise funds or otherwise support the organization. Funds are collected at the bank account of the Khazana Foundation and kept there until they are transferred to Mumbai. Transfers only take place after a quarterly request for funds has been received from the CD Khazana in Mumbai which has been approved jointly by the members of the board of Khazana Foundation. Any reserves are kept on the account until they are requested by the Hamara Foundation in Mumbai and such request is approved by the board members of Stichting Children s Khazana Foundation. No budget is reserved for marketing purposes, unless specific fundraising takes place to fund these marketing purposes. Effectively the only expenses of the organization are the support sent to Mumbai.
