1 Filing An Online Claim For Unemployment Benefits in Michigan To apply for unemployment benefits, first go to 1

2 Commonly Used Terms Calendar Quarter (QTR): A period of 3 consecutive calendar months ending with the last day of March (1st Qtr), June (2nd Qtr), September (3rd Qtr), or December (4th Qtr). Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth (DELEG): The parent agency of the Unemployment Insurance Agency. Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN): A number, assigned to employers by the Internal Revenue Service, to identify a business entity. The UIA can use this number to identify your employer. Commonly Used Terms Internet Filed Claims (IFC): Claims filed by an unemployed worker over the internet. MARVIN (Michigan's Automated Response Voice Interactive Network): MARVIN allows claimants to certify on their claim and inquire about their claim by communicating with the UIA automated benefits system using a touch-tone tone telephone or Internet service. MARVIN PIN: Unemployed workers select their MARVIN PIN (Personal Identification Number) during their first call to MARVIN. PINs can be re-used to file a new, additional or reopened claim. Commonly Used Terms Michigan Talent Bank (MTB): The State of Michigan s s Talent Bank is a repository of résumr sumés s from people looking for jobs and job openings from employers. Unemployed workers who file a claim for unemployment benefits must register for work entering their résumr sumés s on the MTB two to three business days before their first call to MARVIN. Even if an individual registers rs for work on the Internet, they must also report in person to an MWA service center before their first call to MARVIN. Michigan Works! Association (MWA): MWA service centers provide reemployment services to unemployed workers. Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA): The Agency charged with administering Michigan s s unemployment insurance program. 2

3 Some Computer Tips Before Getting Started: For the best results, you should have Internet Explorer 4.0 or Netscape 4.0, or later versions of these browsers. We recommend that your computer be connected to a printer. You will need a printer to print a copy of your confirmation screen. To print what s on your screen, go to File on your browser s menu, then select Print and OK. Your browser must be JavaScript-enabled. If you need to enable JavaScript, see your browser s Help area. Information You Must Have Available To File A Claim For Unemployment Benefits: Social Security Number Personal Identification Number (PIN) from a previous claim used to call MARVIN, your driver's license or State ID number Routing Transit Number and your Account Number if choosing Direct Deposit for your benefit payments Alien Registration Number and the expiration date of your work authorization Names, addresses, dates of employment, and wages paid by the employers you worked for during the past 18 months UIA Provides Two Payment Options: Debit Card Direct Deposit You may choose to receive benefits on a Debit Card, or by Direct Deposit into your checking or savings account. You re given these options at the end of the claim process. You receive a confirmation when your payment method selection is made. 3

As you complete each page, click on the "Proceed" button, where indicated, to continue to the next page. Online Filing Instructions (cont.): When you select "Proceed", wait for a confirmation page containing your confirmation number. Your application has not been accepted until you see the confirmation page. Print and keep the confirmation page for your records. If you do not have a printer, write down the confirmation number. Your confirmation number is your proof of filing your claim. Always give complete and honest answers. The law provides severe penalties for anyone who intentionally gives incorrect information or hides important information to obtain or increase benefits. 4
