WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2010 CONTACT: WILLIAM SHOLLY INDUSTRY & BUSINESS ANALYST A-B-E UNEMPLOYMENT RATE AT 9.4% IN NOVEMBER HARRISBURG, PA (DECEMBER 29) The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the Allentown- Bethlehem-Easton, PA-NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in November fell one-tenth of a percentage point to 9.4 percent. The rate was 0.1 percentage points below the year-ago level. The Scranton-Wilkes-Barre MSA s rate of 9.7 percent was the highest of Pennsylvania s 14 MSA s, while the State College MSA s rate of 5.9 percent was the lowest. The November seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Pennsylvania fell two-tenths of a percentage point to 8.6 percent, while the United States rate rose two-tenths to 9.8 percent. Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton MSA s seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs were up 100 to 331,700 in November (see Table 2A). Over the year, jobs in the MSA increased 1,700. Detailed industry data for the MSA is not seasonally adjusted (see below). Additional seasonal hiring by retailers contributed to an increase of 700 in trade, transportation & utilities. Leisure & hospitality was down 1,900 as local recreational businesses such as Dorney Park wound down operations due to colder weather. Employment services rose 200 in November, the fourth consecutive over-the-month increase. Health care & social assistance, with a gain of 200, reached a record high of 55,400. Local government increased 400 due to added employment at local public schools.
