1 DECEMBER SUB-STATE PRESS RELEASE January 23 rd, 2018 Nevada Closes Out 2017 on a Strong Note; Unemployment Down Throughout the State Statement from Bill Anderson, Chief Economist, Department of Employment, Training & Rehabilitation: Our first assessment of labor market conditions shows that 2017 was a solid year throughout the Silver State, rounding out our seventh year of economic recovery. For the entire year, jobs were up in each of the State s three metro areas. In fact, job levels in both Las Vegas and Reno stood at a record-high in December. Each of the State s 17 counties registered declines in the unemployment rate during the year, relative to Initial claims for unemployment insurance are also trending down. Looking forward, our expectations are for continued improvement in labor market conditions through Statewide, we are looking for jobs to increase by around 40,000 over the course of the year, enough to put further slight downward pressure on jobless rates throughout Nevada. Highlights: Job Growth Since December 2016: o Statewide jobs are up 3.3 percent; up 43,800 o Las Vegas jobs are up 3.1 percent; up 30,000 o Reno jobs are up 2.6 percent; up 5,800 o Carson City jobs are up 2.4 percent; up 700 Unemployment Rates: o Las Vegas: 4.9 percent; down 0.2 point from a year ago o Reno: 3.7 percent; down 0.5 point from a year ago o Carson City: 4.9 percent; down 0.4 point from a year ago o December unemployment rates ranged from 2.6 percent (Eureka) to 5.9 percent (Nye). For all of 2017, unemployment rates were down from 2016 levels in every Nevada county. Online job posting volume does not necessarily correlate with the level of job openings or hiring. Internal company hiring and union hiring are often not captured by online ads. High ad volume often occurs for occupations/industries that are having difficulty finding qualified candidates, high turnover positions/recurring openings, or when companies are building large candidate pools. Online job postings should only be used with caution when developing/analyzing time series trends due to the constant changes in the rate of online advertising usage and in the methods used for collecting the data.
