Investing in alternatives has proved increasingly popular over the last few years as investors have searched for ways to diversify their investment portfolio away from traditional investments such as stocks and shares. Private investors have been searching for ways to hedge against the risk of inflation and economic downturn by selecting suitable assets to diversify their investment portfolios and reduce its overall risk. Investing in alternatives is one way of achieving diversification by owning an alternative asset outright rather than as a stock, share or a fund. Alternative investments have performed very strongly over the last five years and many have outperformed the FTSE 100. In addition they have been less affected by the downturn compared to some more traditional investments proving to show a low correlation. To achieve a truly diversified investment portfolio we always suggest investors seriously consider investing in alternatives. A recent report by Capgemini and Ernst and Young estimates that the rich put 10% of their wealth into alternative assets 4

This contrasts with financial investments such as stocks, shares, bonds and other financial instruments. Some assets are held purely for their ability to appreciate such as collectables, while others are held for the income they generate while they depreciate, such as equipment held for lease. Others exhibit a combination of properties, appreciating in market value whilst providing pleasure from ownership such as Diamond jewellery, Antiques and classic cars. Since 1959 diamonds have risen in price by an average of 15% per annum. Diamonds are a finite resource with a clear global demand. 6

Diamonds and gemstones of similar appearance can have important differences in value. Even experts need powerful analytic tools to detect synthetics, treatments and enhancement processes.
