Insurance is a large part of the Financial Services field, and there are many career paths available. PART I: Researching the Insurance Career Field TASK: As a part of this project, you will need to complete introductory research on insurance careers. You may use whatever website you wish as long as the source is credible, but much of this research can be accomplished online using these websites: Bureau of Labor Statistics National Association of Professional Insurance Agents umerbrochures Ohio Insurance Institute The specific information you will need to find at these sites is the following: Wages Employment outlook Overview of the career Education Interests Skills and abilities Work experience Tasks involved in the job Knowledge On-the-Job training Working conditions Preparation Advancement opportunities Physical demands Helpful high school courses Hiring practices Licensing/Certification Other materials PART II: Presenting the Information TASK: Once you have researched the information, you are to create a presentation, selecting one insurance-related position and then sharing the knowledge you have gained. 10 [DATE WORK WITH TEACHER TO DETERMINE BEST TIME TO GIVE LETTERS TEACHER WILL DISTRIBUTE TO STUDENTS WHEN INTRODUCING THE CAFÉ PRE-ASSIGNMENT.] Welcome! The Ohio Insurance Institute (OII), in partnership with our member insurance companies from across Ohio, is pleased to have you join us on [DATE] at the [INSERT LOCATION: COMPANY AND CITY] for a unique event. [SCHOOL] is preparing you for future careers through its [SCHOOL S PROGRAM OR CLASS TYPE THAT S VISITING]. Now, OII is excited to show you first-hand some of the many related career options available to you in the insurance industry. Our program has three objectives [INCLUDE THE OBJECTIVES ESTABLISHED BY YOU AND THE TEACHER]: Use interactive discovery to show the variety of insurance jobs favoring candidates with a financial, math or statistics background and featuring a potential for career growth; Showcase the people side of the insurance industry with a special emphasis on community involvement; Provide you with insurance industry contacts that will allow you to start your own business network as you consider internships and career options. Your thoughts and questions are a key component. Many opportunities will be provided for extended one-on-one interaction to center on your interests. Please come ready to explore! [IF FOOD PROVIDED] Oh, yes. Lunch will be provided. Questions? Contact me at your convenience. We look forward to seeing you on [DATE]. Best Regards, Mitchell A. 12 Welcome and Thank You! Please accept our THANKS for agreeing to participate in this project! In the following pages, you will find details of the program and key expectations. [IF THE VOLUNTEERS FOR THE DAY AREN T FAMILIAR WITH THE BACKGROUND OF THIS PROJECT, PROVIDE A BRIEF EXPLANATION AS TO WHY YOUR ORGANIZATION IS DOING THIS. BELOW IS WHAT WAS DEVELOPED FOR THE ORIGINAL CAREER CAFÉ IN NOVEMBER 2013 TO PROVIDE YOU WITH AN EXAMPLE OF THE INFO PROVIDED TO THE INDUSTRY VOLUNTEERS. NOTE THAT THIS PILOT HAD INDUSTRY REPRESENTATIVES FROM A VARIETY OF INSURANCE COMPANIES PARTICIPATING SO THE BACKGROUND INFO WAS CRITICAL SO THEY UNDERSTOOD WHY WE WERE UNDERTAKING THIS EFFORT.] In [MONTH] of this year, the Ohio Insurance Institute was approached by [SCHOOL NAME] to learn if OII could help put together a program for their Financial Services students who wanted to discover more about possible careers in the insurance industry. OII contacted [INSURANCE ORGANIZATION HOSTING THE EVENT] who agreed to host the event, and the project developed from there. Three main components were very important to us: We didn t want to talk at students. Instead, we wanted to engage them in an interactive experience that would encourage exploration. The insurance industry is a service industry, filled with people who are inspired to give back to their communities. We wanted to introduce the students to the People Side of Insurance. We wanted to provide the students with an opportunity to create a professional network in insurance for those who are interested. (Thank you for agreeing to be a contact!) We want your feedback. How could your experience as a participant have been improved? What should we continue doing? What should we stop doing? Ultimately, the winners will be the students in Ohio, and you will have had a part in making that happen! [CREATE/PROVIDE AN EVALUATION FOR THE VOLUNTEERS.] 12

What is OII? The Ohio Insurance Institute is an association that represents 34 domestic Property & Casualty insurance companies, 14 foreign P & C insurers and reinsurers, 9 insurance trade associations, and 2 insurance-related organizations. Their member companies represent over 83% of Ohio s private passenger auto insurance market, 84% of the homeowners market, and 43% of the commercial market. OII s primary objective is to help Ohioans achieve a better understanding of insurance and related safety issues. To attain this goal, the association provides services in three areas: Public information, Education, and Legislative and Regulatory Affairs. The [SCHOOL NAME] outreach is part of their Education objective. [IF YOU ARE USING INDUSTRY VOLUNTEERS FROM OUTSIDE YOUR ORGANIZATION] A number of OII member companies have contributed to this pilot program. Volunteers have come from: [INSERT LIST OF INDUSTRY VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATIONS HERE] Additional contributions were provided by: [IF YOU ARE PROVIDING GIVE-AWAY ITEMS TO THE STUDENTS, WE SUGGEST INCLUDING A LIST OF ORGANIZATIONS THAT HAVE PROVIDED ITEMS HERE.] [ORGANIZATION NAMES] Who Are The Students? [PROVIDE A BRIEF OVERVIEW ABOUT THE STUDENTS: THEIR BACKGROUND, IF A PRE- AND/OR POST-VISIT PROJECT WAS ASSIGNED, THE GOAL/OBJECTIVE OF THIS VISIT. We will have XX students who are enrolled in the [LIST CLASS OR PROGRAM AND THE SCHOOL] They are at the junior and senior levels, and have expressed an interest in learning more about a career in some aspect of financial services. There is also a class project to guide exploration of the different positions available in the insurance industry. Our goal is to show them that there are more opportunities than they ever imagined! A welcome letter was sent to the students on [INSERT DATE WELCOME LETTER INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO THIS CONCEPT. MAY NOT FIT WITH YOUR PLANS BUT PROVIDING A SAMPLE AT THE END OF THIS DOCUMENT.] A copy is attached for your review. Dress Code Suggestion [PROVIDE DRESS CODE SUGGESTIONS BASED ON YOUR DESIRES.] We want all participants to feel comfortable, so we are suggesting business casual attire. The mood we re seeking is an informal coffee house without the coffee environment. People are gathering 13

for conversations and to discover answers to their questions. Our hope is that the presentations that open the program will also have that feel. If you were sitting down to an informal, offsite discussion with your mentor, what would you likely wear? Driving, Parking & The Event Location [PROVIDE ALL DIRECTIONS, PARKING, LOCATION AND INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO ACCESS THE BUILDING HERE.] The Agenda and Presentations [PROVIDE AN OVERVIEW/SUMMARY OF THE FLOW OF THE EVENT.] Presentations will mostly be brief, informal introductions into the People Side of Insurance and other topics that the students will be able to explore further. We ask that presenters arrive at least 10- minutes prior to their presentation time. 10:00 10:15 am HOST for the event The students will be welcomed, given an overview of the format and a copy of the agenda, hear about the usual housekeeping items, and then be given a brief introduction into the theme of The People Side of Insurance. 10:15 10:30 am Key employees that can relate and engage the students How the insurance industry gives back to its customers and the community through community service and the social networks. Address common SKILLS needed by all insurance professions (HR representative covers) 10:30 10:45 am Insurance agent presentation The importance of remembering the people as we run the business side of insurance, and how we protect the future. 12:40 1:00 pm Educator from a college RMI program or community college Educational opportunities that will help you prepare for a career in insurance, including information about that school s program. 1:00 1:15 pm Industry representative (possibly from Ohio Insurance Institute) Wrapping up the program, distribution of gift bags, and an invitation to stay connected with us by using the contact list provided in the gift bag to begin your own insurance professional network. Also, if there are jobs that you wanted to know more about that weren t represented today, let us know and we ll find a contact. 14

The Career Café [INSERT DETAILS OF THE CAFÉ EVENT HERE: CONCEPT/MOOD (FORMAL VS. INFORMAL)/EXPECTED QUESTIONS FROM PARTICIPANTS/WHAT DO YOU WANT THEM TO ACCOMPLISH DURING THEIR TIME WITH THE STUDENTS/ETC. Many of you are volunteers for this part of the program. It runs from 10:45 until 12:15, and we ask that you arrive in the meeting room by 10:30 so that the activity will be ready to go. Each table will have a name tent identifying the career represented. The concept is that students will be able to talk with representatives of different careers in a comfortable, informal environment. Each career table will have two chairs one for your use, and the other in case a student wishes to engage in a longer conversation. There is no agenda and no need for you to make a presentation. We want students to have an honest assessment of what the job entails. If there are aspects that can be difficult, please let them know. The last thing that we want is for the students to have a false image of the job. If you have handouts that you want to distribute, feel free to do so. It is not necessary. We want you to be a verbal resource of information for the students. We anticipate there will probably be four common questions: I have an interest in finance, math or statistics. How would that help me in your job? How does your job help others? What chances are there for advancement in your career area? What educational requirements are necessary to be considered for a position such as yours? There is also a student class project. A copy has been provided for you. As you can see, you may be interviewed about your job to help students complete their project. There is no set time per table involved. If some students are engaged and want to spend more time at one place, that s terrific. You aren t trying to influence them to go into your career. You are providing answers to their questions and giving them a friendly option for follow-up contact if they have further questions. The Recruitment table will offer students a chance to respond to one or two behavioral interview questions, and receive feedback about their responses. Also, students may ask about internship preparation so it s suggested that an intern participate in the program. There is a chance that the students will have business cards with them. If you have a business card and want to exchange cards, feel free to do so. Remind the students that they will be receiving a printed contact list including your information in their gift bag at the end of the program. 15

If you have personal knowledge of other job positions and the students ask you about them, please share what you know. If you are asked about a position that you have not held, or you don t know specific details, please refer them to another table representative. If we don t have the job represented, remind them to mention the job on the feedback form and we will find a contact to respond later. Circulating through the event will be Advisors who are evaluating the project to gather feedback and suggestions for the improvement of the program. They will likely be engaging students, and are available if you need assistance. A list of all jobs represented and their representatives has been sent to you. Food [IF YOU RE PROVIDING FOOD (SNACKS OR A MEAL) TO THE STUDENTS AND VOLUNTEERS, PROVIDE DETAILS HERE. REQUEST THAT ANY DIETARY RESTRICTIONS BE ED TO YOU BY A CERTAIN DATE.] FYI: THE PILOT FEATURED A MEXICAN BUFFET AND THE STUDENTS LOVED THE OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO THEM. [COMPANY HIGHLIGHT/TOUR] [IF YOUR ORGANIZATION HAS ANYTHING UNIQUE THAT YOU D LIKE TO SHARE WITH STUDENTS, IT COULD BE DONE AFTER LUNCH. FOR THE PILOT, WE DETERMINED WITH ADVANCE INPUT FROM THE TEACHER THAT A COMPANY TOUR ISN T THE BEST USE OF TIME FOR THE STUDENTS. SEVERAL STUDENTS MENTIONED THE DESIRE TO HEAR FROM AN SIU INVESTIGATOR IN AN INFORMAL SETTING THIS MIGHT WORK WELL HERE.] [Gift Bags] [FOR THE PILOT, THE HOST ORGANIZATION ALONG WITH MANY OII MEMBERS PROVIDED ITEMS FOR GIFT BAGS THAT WERE GIVEN TO THE STUDENTS AS THEY WERE DEPARTING. INCLUDED IN THE GIFT BAGS WAS A LIST OF THE 30 CAREER PATHWAYS FEATURED ON AND A LIST CONTAINING CONTACT INFORMATION OF ALL PROGRAM INDUSTRY PARTICIPANTS. FYI: THE LINK TO DOWNLOAD/PRINT THE 30 CAREERS: 16

Feedback You will be contacted for your feedback. We will be interested not only in how you felt the program impacted the students, but also how your experience was as a volunteer. Your responses will be greatly appreciated! [A SAMPLE OF THE VOLUNTEER SURVEY IS ATTACHED] Questions? What do you need to know that hasn t been answered? You are invited to contact either: [INSERT COMPANY CONTACT INFO] [INSERT OII CONTACT] Mitch Wilson mitchw@ohioinsurance.org phone Thank You Again! 17

POSSIBLE CAREER TABLES ON-SITE [SCHOOL] VISIT Featured Career Tables TO BE DETERMINED BY YOU AND THE TEACHER We recommend providing a very brief job overview at each table for students to take with them. This allows students to pick-up materials for jobs they may be interested in, but didn t get a chance to visit the professional based on time. Time flew by during the pilot and many student and industry volunteers indicated they would have liked to have additional time allotted for these visits. Human Resources Compensation & Benefits Premium Auditor (or other Auditing position) Project Manager (Program Management) Accountant (Reconciliation / Collections / Tax Specialist / Statistical Reporting Analyst) Predictive Modeling Investment/Security Analyst (or support) Actuary (Actuarial Technician or Actuarial Analyst) Claims Adjuster Internship Recruitment (Interview table) Insurance Agent Industry Advocate Underwriter (probably Personal Lines and Bonds) IT Procurement Analyst (Software Procurement) Loss Control Consultant (Risk Analysis Assistant) SIU Investigator Buyer or Purchasing Assistant Marketing Assistant Operations Research Analyst Pricing Analyst Community Relations Insurance Services (In-House Agency serving employees) Internal Auditor (Audit Specialist) Accounts Payable (Payment Services Representative) Sales Support (Administrator or Consultant) Specialty Lines Analyst (Alternative Choices Table Military before career?) Information Technology Representatives at each job table should be available from 10:30 to 12:15, although they are welcome to stay for the entire program. Lunch is provided at 12:15. Job representatives should be able to talk about the financial knowledge components of their jobs specifically, how a student with a financial degree might fit into their area or job. We also ask that all participants and job representatives have business cards available for the student attendees, and be willing to allow the students to follow-up with them as a business contact after the program for networking purposes. 18

[DATE] [NAME & ADDRESS] Via On behalf of the Ohio Insurance Institute (OII), THANK YOU for participating in our Career Café hosted by [COMPANY] on [DATE]. We couldn t have presented this program without the support of you and your organization. We feel this was a unique opportunity for students to see first-hand some of the many related career options available to them in the insurance industry. Although the initial feedback has been positive, we know there is always room for improvement. [SCHOOL] is collecting suggestions from the student participants, and we would appreciate having your suggestions, too. Please let us know your thoughts in the brief evaluation form (attached). You have the unique perspective of having been an industry participant, and your thoughts will be very valuable as we improve our template for companies to use to engage their local students in seeking career opportunities. When we started with this concept, we had three objectives: Use interactive discovery to show the variety of insurance jobs favoring candidates with a financial, math or statistics background and featuring a potential for career growth; Showcase the people side of the insurance industry with a special emphasis on community involvement; Provide students with insurance industry contacts that will allow them to start a business network as they consider internships and career options. Through your assistance, we are hopeful that we achieved these objectives. Again, thanks for your support of this program. We look forward to your input. Best Regards, Mitchell A.
