Why Policy and Environmental Changes?
Interplay of Approaches POLICY CHANGE SYSTEMS & ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION
Policy Change Definition Interventions that use laws, ordinances, rules, regulations and/or mandates to effect change in the behavior among a population or organization Examples Smoking ban on airlines Seatbelts in trucks Vending machine policy Policy to allot physical activity time at the workplace
Worksite Policies Most effective when written Policies reinforced by all levels of management as central to the core mission and values of the organization will be more powerful than policies that exist only on paper Can be enforced (ex: tobacco use, food procurement) Incentives Added to performance measures/reviews
Example Policy Fitness Break Policy (organization) is committed to the health of our employees and to helping and supporting them in their efforts to achieve optimal health through regular physical activity. Therefore: All employees are encouraged to take fitness breaks lasting no more than thirty minutes in a given workday, provided that such time is used to participate in physical activity. The fitness breaks can be taken as two 15-minute breaks or one 30 minutes break. Employees must sign out for fitness breaks. Fitness breaks cannot be taken in addition to other breaks. Fitness breaks cannot be taken at the beginning or end of the workday. Fitness breaks may be used for activities that include, but not limited to: Participating in onsite fitness classes Walking or jogging Swimming Workout in fitness center Bicycling Name of Authorized Representative Date
Systems Change Definition Interventions or changes that leverage the functional components of an organization, institution, or system. Examples Airport security procedures Food distribution system Using healthcare extenders
Environmental Change Definition Interventions that involve changes to the economic, social, or built/physical environment. Examples Designated smoking areas Walking trail & club Public health signage On-site gym

Worksite Examples Activities and staffing related to initiating, developing, and advocating for worksite wellness policies such as: Increasing healthy food and beverage options Securing and promoting free or reduced-price access to exercise facilities Ensuring the workplace is free from occupational hazards Institutionalizing and setting aside resources to implement chronic disease self-management programs Create a tobacco-free work environment
Stages of Change
Focus Areas for High Risk Employees Examine benefits package Screen employees Offer a CDSMP course Hold educational programs Incorporate nutrition and physical education Promote cessation services Provide disease specific materials Provide incentives
Lactation Programs Quick Facts: Approximately 70% of employed mothers with children younger than 3 years work full time. 1/3 of this population return to work within 3 months after giving birth & 2/3 return 6 months Low-income women typically return to work a lot sooner then their higher-income counterparts which can make it difficult to continue breastfeeding while on the job.
