1 Scottish Board Members - profiles Alan has worked as a Consulting Actuary in Edinburgh with Aon Hewitt since He is involved in all aspects of advice in respect of occupational pension schemes to trustees and employers. He has held a Scheme Actuary Certificate since 2005, and previously worked with Jardine Lloyd Thomson and Buck Consultants. Alan Watson Alan was previously a member of the Faculty Council then Institute and Faculty Council from He is currently Leader of the Scottish Board, a member of the Management Board and Chairman of the Standards Review Committee. He also serves on various working parties. Previous roles include serving on the Pensions Board and the Awards Committee. He was a co-opted member of the Scottish Board and served on the EU Referendum Working Party. He is also a past chair of the Scottish Actuaries Club. His external interests are philately, heraldry and steam trains. So he can wear several anoraks at one time. Stephen is a Corporate Pensions Pricing Actuary for Prudential Assurance. He has been with Prudential for 4 years, and prior to that has worked for Standard Life and Scottish Widows. Stephen has given several presentations on behalf of the IFoA endorsing and raising the awareness of the actuarial profession to undergraduate students across Scotland and England, and also in Beijing. Stephen Cunningham Stephen joined the Scottish Board in August 2013 and has primarily been involved with Key Responsibility 1 to Encourage and develop the actuarial community in Scotland, helping to raise awareness of Stirling as a CPD region, and was actively involved with the IFoA engagement with Stakeholders re the impact of Scottish Devolution.
2 Bruce works at Aberdeen Standard Investments as an Investment Director, developing Aberdeen Standard Investments insurance solutions proposition and business. Over his career, he has gained experience in marketing, corporate finance and international business development, especially his early involvement in the development of Standard Life Aberdeen s Indian life insurance and asset management JVs with HDFC. Bruce Porteous He gained banking experience in a retail mortgage bank startup at Standard Life and has broad risk management and regulatory development experience, especially Basel II and Solvency II, Chairing ABI s Solvency II Committee. Bruce graduated from Edinburgh and Cambridge Universities with degrees in Mathematical Statistics, is a UK and Indian actuary and a Council Member of the UK actuarial profession. Nicola joined the Scottish Board this year as the President of the Glasgow Actuarial Student Society (GASS). In this role, Nicola s primary focus for the year will be to coordinate seminars and social events to enhance the engagement of actuarial students in Glasgow. In her professional life Nicola is part of the Trustee Consulting team at Barnett Waddingham, and also has previous experience in public section pensions, specifically the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS). Nicola Tait In her free time Nicola enjoys travelling, running, hiking and drinking coffee with friends. Remi is one of the newest members of the Scottish Board, and is involved in a number of committees, from communications to FACT. In his professional life, he is a qualified actuary working for Moody s Analytics as a Product Manager for their market leading Economic Scenario Generator. In his spare time he likes to take part in crazy charity activities such as trekking up Mt. Kilimanjaro or swimming across the English Channel as part of a relay. Remi Komplinski
3 Barry joined the Scottish Board in 2016 as a co-opted member. He is now the Board s KSS/Actuarial CPD Group Lead, tasked with organising interesting and wide ranging CPD sessions throughout the year as well as contributing to the Schools and University engagement Group of the Board. He has over 25 years industry experience, working across all 3 lines of defence in a variety of roles at Scottish Mutual, Abbey National, Prudential and his current employer, Standard Life Aberdeen, where he is the Senior Prudential Risk Manager. Barry is also an assistant examiner for the Profession. In his spare time, he caters to the demands of his 2 children but still manages time to indulge in travel, reading and sport, playing volleyball and watching football. Barry Shannon Jules is Gen Re s Regional Manager: Life Health for the UK and Ireland. He has been with Gen Re since 1993 in a variety of roles in South Africa and the UK. Before that he was employed in the Employee Benefits division of Metropolitan Life in South Africa. He is a member of the ABI's Protection Committee and is the Chair of the ABI s Social Care Working Group. He is the currently President elect for the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. Jules Constantinou He has presented on the subject of Long Term Care at ABI events, Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and Reform conferences. In 2015, he was invited to present at the 6th International Carers Conference in Gothenburg on the private funding options for social care. He has a Bachelor s Degree in Statistics and Actuarial Science from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa and is a qualified Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries. Dermot was elected to the Council of the IFOA in 2017 and has been a member of the Scottish Board since He has represented the IFOA before the Scottish Committee of the UK Parliament. He belongs to the Population Issues Working Group of the IAA and is a member of a joint IAA-IAIS working group looking at the regulation of actuarial services in inclusive insurance markets. He is the Company Actuary of the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland. He is the chair of trustees of Citywise, a mentoring charity and Hon Treasurer of the British Society of Population Studies. Dermot Grenham
4 Gavin joined the Scottish Board three years ago, focussing on raising the profile of actuaries in Scotland, with particular interest in schools and universities. He now continues that work, alongside acting as the Employer Liaison Lead. Having previously worked in industry, he is now an Associate Professor within the Department of Actuarial Mathematics & Statistics at Heriot-Watt University. Gavin Reid Outside of work, he has a keen interest in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, acting as an examiner and teacher trainer. Caitlin very recently joined the Scottish Board and is a member of both the Schools and Universities and Charitable Trust Committees. Caitlin has promoted the actuarial profession at a number of universities over the last few years and hopes joining the Board will allow her to further this work. Caitlin currently works in the Protection Pricing team at Royal London and is studying for her last actuarial exam. In her spare time, Caitlin leads a local Girlguiding Unit and enjoys baking. Caitlin Stronach Pawel joined the Scottish Board two years ago as the President of the Faculty of Actuaries Student Society. Since then he has been involved in a variety of activities organised by the Board. Currently he is leading the communication committee where together with two other members he looks into developing more effective communication content and channels. In his professional life Pawel is an Assistant Director in the Enterprise Risk Solutions Department at Moody's Analytics. Pawel Lojko Outside of these activities, he also sits on Investment Boards of two charities. In his free time he enjoys hiking, reading, travelling and going to the gym.
5 Ji-Hyang joined the Scottish Board in August 2017, and is currently working to help further develop the Knowledge Sharing Scotland programme. Ji-Hyang is a pensions actuary, working for Barnett Waddingham. She is a member of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries Diversity Advisory Group, and also volunteers as an Assistant Examiner. Ji-Hyang Lee In her free time, Ji-Hyang likes reading, cooking, Pilates, listening to terrible heavy metal and following the (mis)fortunes of Scottish rugby. Nick joined the Scottish Board in August 2017 and has taken on role of Committee Lead for the Faculty of Actuaries Charitable Trust. His responsibilities include managing the use of the Trust s funds and ensuring the Trust holds sufficient funds to meet its obligations now and in the future. Nick also sits on the Public Affairs, Schools/University and Endowment Fund committees. Nick is Consulting Actuary with Conduent HR Services providing a variety of actuarial and benefit consultancy advice to his trustee and corporate clients. Nicholas Chadha FFA In his free time, Nick is the Finance Director of a company that owns two diesel locomotives. He also enjoys golfing, travelling and the occasional cycle ride. John has spent most of his career in executive level roles with a variety of product providers, most recently as Managing Director at NEST. John Taylor Throughout his career, John has been committed to finding ways for consumers to manage their money better. John joined Hymans Robertson LLP in 2014 as Head of Guided Outcomes. He is now leading the development of this innovative approach to help employees get the best out of their workplace pension s scheme. Alison joined the Scottish Board a few months ago. Her first role on the Board is being part of the Communication Committee where, along with two other members, she will look into developing more effective communication content and channels. In her professional life Alison is a Corporate Actuary at JLT Employee Benefits. In her spare time she enjoys going to exercise classes, learning Spanish and playing the clarinet. Alison Kearns
6 Stuart joined the Scottish Board last year to support the board's KR2 objective, raising the profile of the actuarial profession in Scotland. Currently he leads the schools and universities engagement committee where he looks at how best to promote careers in mathematics to school students, and actuarial careers to university students. Stuart is an Assistant Director in the Enterprise Risk Solutions department at Moody's Analytics Stuart McIlvenny Catherine Thorn I joined the Scottish Board in 2015, and was initially involved in organising KSS events, but am now delighted Barry is taking the lead on this. I am enjoying starting getting involved in the Professional Bodies forum. I have worked for Standard Life, including time in Germany and Austria, and for Aegon and Prudential. My current role is a non-actuarial one within Compliance, which has been a new challenge for me. I enjoy learning, which is why I am such a supporter of the Scottish Board s activity in this area, and I studied for an MBA after completing the actuarial exams. I have 2 children, aged 14 and 12, who are both good at maths, but their main interest is currently sport, so my main use of spreadsheets currently is keeping track of ballet, hockey, swimming, netball, kayaking and basketball lessons. Iain joined the Scottish Board two years ago. He has acted as the Board s liaison with the Enterprising Maths in Scotland event, which brings together over 60 teams of the brightest S3/S4 pupils every year to take part in a day of mathematical competition. Iain is a Director in the Scottish Pensions team at KPMG and is also involved in the organising committee of the Scottish Actuaries Club. Iain McLellan
7 Craig joined the Scottish Board this year as the President of the Faculty of Actuaries Student Society. He is also now involved in the employer engagement committee, which aims to run events highlighting key areas of the IFoA to members in the community. Professionally, Craig is a recently qualified actuary at Hymans Robertson, where he works with corporate and trustee clients looking to provide better outcomes for their pension schemes. Craig Ritchie In his free time he enjoys both playing and watching football and golf, as well as making the most of his holidays from work by travelling. Leigh-Ann joined the Scottish Board in August 2017 and her special responsibilities are the KSS/Actuarial CPD (organising the event programme in Scotland) and the Charitable Trust Committees. In her professional life Leigh-Ann is leading Standard Life s actuarial work to prepare for Britain s exit from the European Union. Leigh-Ann Plenderleith Outside of these activities she performs various roles in the highland dancing world and also enjoys hiking, watching rugby and adventure travel.
