10 Product Spotlight Your disability and Absence Management Team Highly experienced for more positive outcomes Case History Smarter claims management helps keep short term disability exactly that short term After an employee in an IT department was involved in an auto accident, she had residual medical issues relating to neck pain. Her doctor recommended she stop working and do physical therapy. Once her claim was initiated, Guardian assigned a vocational rehabilitation specialist to the case. He worked with the employer and doctor to do a complete workplace reassessment. He brought in a vocational ergonomic specialist who analyzed the employee s workstation. After ergonomic adaptations were made (and the employer was reimbursed $2,500 for related expenses by Guardian), the doctor approved the employee s return to work. Active involvement by Guardian enabled the employee to return to work safely before the end of her short term claim and before a long term claim could be made. The employer retained a valuable employee at no cost. Doctors may understand the claimant s physical abilities, but they may have less understanding of the job duties.
