2 Question 1 What are the two issues which worked well in Horizon 2020 and two which need further improvements? 2 issues which worked well: Making the proposals in the DoW without many changes generally worked well, and simplified the process. Generally, the online project reporting system is working well and makes it easy to report. 2 issues which need further improvements: The rigidity in the programme is still an issue: there should be more opening to variation in the project after a period of time (maybe once in the middle of the project). The very low success rate in the area of SwafS is a problem in increasing public engagement with science. Increased budget is needed.

3 Question 2 How could the EU funding landscape for R&I be further rationalised? Regarding EU funding landscape for R&I: There is a need to provide much more support for very small organisations, SMEs and community groups (eg. DIY), as the barrier to entry is too high to be part of large projects. They could also have alternative smaller pots of money where the stakes are not so high. Therefore, there should be lighter requirements on reporting for small entities that receive limited funding, with some trust on the project coordinator to manage the funding. In addition, clearer definition of the different types of actions can be helpful when defining H2020 calls. There should be more efforts to explain terminology in Swafs such as RRI but also to be consistent (eg. changes between Science 2.0 and Open Science can become confusing).

4 Question 3 How could the societal relevance of EU R&I programmes be boosted? Regarding the societal relevance of EU R&I programmes: Instead of keeping RRI and engagement only in a closed area (such as SwafS), there should be a demand that every project must have a mandatory proportion of funding dedicated to societal benefits and public engagement (maybe 5%) so it becomes part of how RRI work in the EU. There is also value in providing more significant funding to SwafS, to demonstrate the commitment to this area. Organising at the European level Consortiums of public and private institutions that can help and support projects by providing access to spaces, museums, classes, labs,..., in order not to start from scratch. Having some portions of funding decided by an open voting system such as the participatory budget scheme in the City of Paris.
