10 . California Agriculture California is the top agricultural producer in the United States. Our State produces over 400 different commodities, which account for about half of the US grown fruit, nuts, and vegetables, many of which are only grown in California. Some of the fruits and vegetables you may have eaten today, either fresh or in a processed product, likely originated from California. California Quarantines Exotic pests pose a threat to agriculture in both Santa Clara County and across California. On average, a new pest is introduced into California every 60 days. Each year, these insects and diseases cost our state s agricultural industry approximately $3 billion in control costs, crop losses, and in export losses due to restrictions. Please Help Keep California Pest Free! Santa Clara County s Quarantine Exclusion Program Santa Clara County has a detector dog team inspecting packages at parcel delivery facilities. Many packages of agricultural products are sent in unmarked packages and the only way we know they contain agricultural products is to employ a powerful nose. Our detector canine, Hendrix, is a tan hound/lab mix. Hendrix is a trained to inspect parcels and to detect the presence of agricultural products. Hendrix will scratch at parcels to alert our dog-handler the package contains agricultural products. The package is then inspected by a biologist to determine if the agricultural products are allowed into California. Hendrix finds an unmarked package with fruit. Hendrix demonstrating how he finds fruit inside boxes. Hendrix and his handler protect California agriculture. For more information, please contact: Santa Clara County Division of Agriculture 1553 Berger Drive San Jose, CA Phone: (408) To see more teacher resources and read more about Hendrix and our detection program, visit Santa Clara County Division of Agriculture s website:
