6 ROBERT S RULES OF ORDER MINUTES Minutes are the written record of each meeting. Minutes are typically shared with SAA members a week after the meeting and posted online. Past minutes are available on the System Governance website.
7 ROBERT S RULES OF ORDER MOTIONS Business is brought before an assembly by the motion of a member. - Robert s Rules of Order (11 th ed.), pg. 27 USED FOR: - Regular business (adopt agenda, approve minutes, adjourn) - Making a decision as a group
8 ROBERT S RULES OF ORDER HOW to MAKE a MOTION First member: I move that Second member: I second. Chair: [states the questions]
9 ROBERT S RULES OF ORDER CONSIDERING a MOTION After the chair states the question, the assembly debates the merits of the motion. The chair will assign turns to speak and arguments are typically addressed to the chair.
10 ROBERT S RULES OF ORDER PUTTING the QUESTION After all members who wish to have had a chance to speak, the chair asks if the group is ready to vote. If they are, the chair puts the question to a vote.
11 ROBERT S RULES OF ORDER ANNOUCING the RESULTS After the vote, the chair will read out the result and note if the motion carried or failed.
12 ROBERT S RULES OF ORDER RESOLUTIONS For more important or complex questions, or when greater formality is desired, the motion can be presented in the form of a resolution.
13 ROBERT S RULES OF ORDER SAA MOTIONS & RESOLUTIONS Any SAA member can present a motion or resolution for consideration. They can be done at the meeting or written out ahead of time.
