1 Quarterly Newsletter The Saddleworth Project Working in conjunction with Mr. Boyd Farrar of The Farrar Partnership we have decided to redesign our dementia care on the Saddleworth Suite. We have carried out extensive research and visited several other care facilities that offer dementia care. We made our relatives aware of our plans back in August of last year and we can now see that certain environmental improvements have already occurred: new artwork throughout the suite, new door images; entrance and patio area leading to the garden, this has given us some much welcomed natural light. The environment is taking on a 1950 s and 60 theme. It is not just the environment that is going to change it is the whole ethos and rationale of our dementia care that is being developed, care will become more individualized and person centered. We will make the change from being task based to activity based, from custodial to therapeutic. The operational changes will take some time but change has begun, you can see the smart new uniforms of members of Team Saddleworth. When we are happy that we have got it right we will formally re-launch the Saddleworth Suite. We are creating an enhanced, safe, healing environment. 1
2 Social Events and Activities. Since August there have been a number of events and activities with Total Care for residents and their families to enjoy. Including regulars such as Pulse and the Music Workshop with Andy and Billy. August itself appears to have been the month of transport problems as both of our planned events, the Music Workshop which was planned for the 8th and the Clothes Show planned for the 10th were cancelled due to problems with transport. Luckily we were able to re book both of them for September. On September 21st a party was held on Lakeland with entertainment provided by Fletch As we moved into October we were pleased to host the Body Shop, with residents and visitors able to try and buy various Body Shop Products. We also held a Friends of Total Care Meeting on the 13th, giving residents, families and staff a chance to meet and discuss ideas for future events and socials. On the 27th November we held our Christmas Fair, which was slightly modified from previous years. We held the usual raffle, bottle tombola and the Whiskey Game whilst residents and families enjoyed the Christmas music provided by the Boarshaw Brass Band and mince pies and mulled wine. The run up to Christmas also included the Christmas party s on each of the units and visits from various Primary schools in the local area. We also held our usual Carol service on Wednesday 21st December starting with Carols on the Dales, before moving onto Saddleworth and finishing on YDU with the full Carol Service. 2

4 Social Therapy on Saddleworth Engaging in Social Therapy with residents is a By Lynne Banham. wonderful opportunity to get to know each one on a more personal level. When I first began working on Saddleworth providing Social Therapy the first thing I concentrated on, was becoming more familiar with the information kept in the residents files under the This is Me section, I also took the opportunity whenever it arose to speak to family and friends whilst they were visiting residents to find out more about their life. In particular I wanted to learn more about any hobbies or interests they had, where they grew up and went to school and also where they worked. This knowledge of the residents enables me to try to tailor the activities we provide for the residents. The staff on the unit are also interested in and get involved with the activities that the residents take part in, which helps to create a lovely atmosphere on the unit. Social Therapy is a joint effort between every individual that works on the unit, with staff sharing thoughts and ideas to try to ensure that the therapy for each residents is as stimulating, enjoyable and unique to them as we can make it. We have run a number of different activities in recent months including drawing, painting and looking through books. We are currently working on making our own visual books of pictures which the residents have chosen and when these are completed they will be kept on a table in our library area. We also have a number of residents whose families have told us that they used to really enjoy baking. So we have run a number of baking sessions for them which 4
5 they have enjoyed. We have a number of educational items on the unit which appeal to certain residents. Whilst some of our gentleman enjoy some of the items which involve building and fixing things. Whilst at Christmas as part of our activities the residents made cards to send to their families both at home and abroad. Some of our residents enjoy looking through local history books which have pictures of how life in Oldham used to be. They particularly like those which cover the period from the 1940 s through to the 1980 s. This has provided us an opportunity to learn more about them as they have told us things about their life and their opinions on various subjects that we otherwise may not have learnt as the pictures have triggered memories for them. We are currently liaising with Oldham Art Gallery who are recognised as a Dementia Friendly organisation and who provide a service called Making Memories. They provide a Reminiscence service including making up Reminiscence boxes both for organisations like Total Care and for individuals. These boxes will provide a great asset in enabling us to provide the best possible Social Therapy for each of our residents. Which will hopefully enrich the lives of the residents as well as enable them to continue to gain happiness and enjoyment from a hobby or interest which they have enjoyed throughout their life. 5
