3 Background and objectives 1. The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), UN Environment, and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity have launched the project Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services in South Africa, a 3-year partnership project funded by the European Union. Other partner countries in the project are Brazil, China, India, and South Africa. 2. Building on internationally agreed methodology (the SEEA Experimental Ecosystem Accounting, in short SEEA EEA) and on the development of national competences, the project will initiate pilot testing of the SEEA EEA in partner countries, in order to advance the knowledge agenda on natural capital accounting. 3. The project s main objective in the partner countries is to mainstream natural capital accounting and valuation of ecosystem services in data driven decision and policy making and is expected to influence policy-makers at national, regional and local level. 4. A consultation mission will take place from October in New-Delhi, India. The objectives of the visit are to consult various stakeholders in India (e.g. MoSPI/CSO India, Line Ministries, NITI Aayog, technical agencies, EU delegation), and conduct detailed discussions with MOSPI / CSO India to agree on the project plan, and define the administrative arrangements and other coordination issues. 5. The project team would consist of Ivo Havinga and Bram Edens (from UNSD), and Monica Lopez and Kavita Sharma (both UNEP).
