3 OVERVIEW The annual National Development and Fiscal Management Symposium has replaced other national and regional finance conferences and seminars. Two opportunities to attend the symposium exist. The first is held prior to the National Annual Meeting on May at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego, California. The second is held June 5 7 at the Sheraton Annapolis in Annapolis, Maryland. Both begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday and conclude by 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Each has four tracks two operating tracks, a major gifts and capital campaign track, and a fiscal management track with 12 sessions in each track. Participants may attend sessions from any track. Those who attend all the sessions in the fiscal management track will qualify for the Fiscal Management I certification. In addition, there are five general sessions, including a dialogue with Gary Butler, assistant Chief Scout Executive of Council Operations; and presentations by Tom Ahern, international author and communication expert. Ahern has written the best-selling books How to Write Fundraising Materials that Raise More Money and (with Simone Joyaux) Keep Your Donors: The Guide to Better Communications and Stronger Relationships. He will evaluate a limited number of councils best communication pieces as part of his presentations, and will conduct three workshops during each symposium. The cost for each symposium is $300, which includes all meals. Participants are responsible for their own travel and hotel.
