1 METHODOLOGICAL NOTES Deposits and loans by amount category and economic activity The statistics on deposits and loans by amount category and economic activity present end-of-quarter information about the number and amount of deposits received and loans granted by the banks from and to the resident sectors Non-financial corporations and Households and NPISHs 1. The statistics are prepared in accordance with the methodology applied for the compilation of monetary statistics 2, which is in accordance with the requirements of the ECB regulations on monetary and financial statistics and of the European System of Accounts 1995 (ESA 95) 3. The economic activity breakdown follows the Classification of Economic Activities (CEA 2008) of the National Statistical Institute. CEA ensures the direct implementation of the Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community (NACE Rev. 2). I. Data source For the purpose of statistics on deposits and loans by amount category and economic activity, the reporting agents are all banks in Bulgaria, including branches of foreign banks. II. Reporting period The reporting period is a calendar quarter. The information presents the number and amount of deposits and loans, distributed by amount category and economic activity as of the last calendar day of the respective quarter. III. Breakdown by sector The data cover loans and deposits of non-financial corporations, households and NPISHs residents of the Republic of Bulgaria. 1. Non-financial corporations sector (Sector S.11 by ESA 95) consists of institutional units which are market producers and whose principal activity is the production of goods and/or non-financial services. 1 Non-profit institutions serving households. 2 Methodological notes concerning the compilation of monetary statistics are available on the BNB website under section Statistics/ Monetary and Interest Rate Statistics/ Monetary Statistics. 3 Detailed sectoral classification is available on the BNB website under section Statistics/ Methodological Notes/ Institutional Sectors. 1

Households and NPISHs sector (Sectors S.14 and S.15 by ESA 95) includes the following subsectors: Households sector (Sector S.14) individuals or groups of individuals as consumers and possibly also as entrepreneurs producing market goods and services (market producers), as well as producers of goods and non-financial services for exclusively own final use. The subsector also includes sole proprietorships and partnerships without independent legal status. Non-profit institutions serving households sector (Sector S.15) separate legal entities, whose principal activity is connected to serving, supporting and assisting households (NPISHs). Their principal resources, apart from those derived from occasional sales, are derived from voluntary contributions in cash or in kind from households in their capacity as consumers, from payments made by the General government sector and from property income. Trade unions, political parties, foundations, associations, churches or religious societies, social, cultural, sports clubs etc. are included here. IV. Breakdown by currency BGN, EUR and other currencies (all foreign currencies other than euro) - the foreign currencies being presented in their BGN equivalent. V. Breakdown by instrument 4,5 1. Deposits The scope of this instrument covers the following types of banks liabilities: Overnight deposits; Deposits with agreed maturity; Deposits redeemable at notice; Repurchase agreements; Loans. 2. Loans The instrument covers the following types of banks claims: Overdrafts; Loans, other than overdrafts; Repurchase agreements. 4 Additional information on the scope of individual instrument categories is published in the Methodological notes to the monetary statistics on the BNB website under section Statistics/ Monetary and Interest Rate Statistics/ Monetary statistics. 5 Deposits and loans are reported at nominal value, i.e. they do not include accrued but unpaid interest. 2
3 VI. Breakdown by purpose of loans (only for Households and NPISHs sector) 1. Consumer loans loans granted for the purpose of purchase of goods and services for personal use of the households; 2. Loans for house purchases loans extended to households for the purpose of investing in housing for own use or rental use, including building and home improvements; 3. Other loans all other loans extended to households, including loans for education and medical treatment. Loans for commercial or production purposes and loans to NPISHs are also included in the indicator. VII. Breakdown by maturity of loans Loans other than overdraft are presented by their original maturity, i.e. they are distributed according to the initially agreed period of time during which the loan cannot be repaid without any kind of penalty. Up to 1 year; Over 1 and up to 5 years; Over 5 years. VIII. Breakdown by economic activity Deposits and loans of the Non-financial corporations sector are distributed over seventeen economic activities. Until the distribution by economic activity was done according to the National Classification of Economic Activities (NCEA 2003). After the deposits and loans are distributed in accordance with the Classification of Economic Activities (CEA 2008) 6 of the National Statistical Institute. CEA-2008 ensures the direct implementation of the Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community (NACE Rev. 2). IX. Amount categories Deposits of the resident sectors Non-financial corporations and Households and NPISHs are distributed over thirteen quantitative categories and the loans over eleven, depending on the amount of each individual loan or deposit. Each loan or deposit is referred to only one quantitative category. X. Data dissemination The Bulgarian National Bank disseminates on its website a press release and tables with data of deposits and loans statistics by amount category and economic activity. The data are presented in the following tables: 6 Classification of economic activities (CEA 2008) is available on the NSI web site under section Products and Services/ Statistical Classifications and Registries/ Statistical Classifications. 3

They cover the statistical information on the economic activity breakdown of deposits and loans by type or by amount category (Statistics/ Monetary and Interest Rate Statistics/ Deposits and Loans by Amount Category and Economic Activity / Quarterly Data): Deposits of Non-financial Corporations, Households and NPISHs by Amount Category and Economic Activity; Deposits of Non-financial Corporations, Households and NPISHs by Type and Economic Activity; Loans to Non-financial Corporations, Households and NPISHs by Amount Category and Economic Activity; Loans to Non-financial Corporations, Households and NPISHs by Type and Economic Activity. 2. Four tables that include data series since December 2005 and present the dynamic data on deposits and loans distributed by economic activity 7 or amount category (Statistics/ Monetary and Interest Rate Statistics/ Deposits and Loans by Amount Category and Economic Activity/ Data Series): Deposits of Non-financial Corporations, Households and NPISHs by Economic Activity; Deposits of Non-financial Corporations, Households and NPISHs by Amount Category; Loans to Non-financial Corporations, Households and NPISHs by Economic Activity; Loans to Non-financial Corporations, Households and NPISHs by Amount Category. Data series on deposits and loans by amount category and economic activity are also published in the semi-annual and annual reports of the Bulgarian National Bank. Data are simultaneously released to all interested parties. The publication dates are announced in the Statistical Data Release Calendar 8. XI. Revision policy The published data on statistics on deposits and loans by amount category and economic activity are subject to revisions in the following cases: Obtained additional information, incorrect classification, improved reporting procedures and correction of mistakes in the data submitted by reporting agents; Change in the applied methodological standards. 7 Until the distribution by economic activity followed the National Classification of Economic Activities (NCEA 2003). After the deposits and loans are distributed in accordance with the Classification of Economic Activities (CEA 2008) of the National Statistical Institute. 8 The Statistical Data Release Calendar is available on the BNB website under section Press Office/Calendar. 4
