4 Euratom Budget: TOTAL: 1788 million, including Fission 355 million, Fusion 710 million, JRC 724 million EURATOM research and training indirect actions on nuclear fission and radiation protection ( ) Specific objectives for indirect actions (fission): support safe operation of nuclear systems; contribute to development of solutions for the management of ultimate waste; support development and sustainability of nuclear competences; foster radiation protection; promote innovation and industrial competitiveness ensure availability and use of research infrastructures

Single Euratom programme Programme complements 'Horizon 2020 (same rules for participation) Co-funding and possible externalisation Simplified access to research funds Possibility for cross-cutting actions within Euratom Programme across Euratom Programme and Horizon 2020 Focus on nuclear safety and nuclear training

6 Forms of Community support follow the same approach as Horizon 2020 Specific instruments envisaged by the Rules for Participation Other support for indirect actions provided for by the New Financial Regulation, e.g. EIB loans Programme co-fund action - for supplementing calls or programmes funded by entities other than EU bodies managing research and innovation programmes See for example EMRP (emrponline.eu) also complementary use of Structural Funds (relation with national Operational Programmes)

7 Last Euratom FP 7 Fission Call 2013 Work Programme 2013 Expected Call publication : July 2012 Call Deadline : November 2012 Evaluation of proposals : early 2013 The Euratom WP 2013 is meant to support the Preparatory Phase (PP) of Horizon 2020 Possible setting up of legal entities of pan-european interest aiming at optimal coordination, cross-border operation and possible integration of national efforts PP would include strategic, governance, management, financial, legal and technical work Successful PP would lead to Public-Public and Public-Private Partnerships implementing joint research programmes being attractive at world level

8 Euratom WP 2013 Safety and competitiveness of existing nuclear installations Expected impact: Increased safety through coordinated research between Member States in plant life management and prevention and mitigation of severe accidents; development of common strategies for plant safety at EU level and promotion of the European safety culture worldwide. Support to foster coordination and integration of national research efforts in reactor safety to develop a joint research programme to be implemented (to be possibly supported under the next Framework Programme ). Key actors for such a project NUGENIA as well as relevant public authorities and funding bodies Links should be maintained with SNETP

9 NUGENIA Impact on the citizen The launching of NUGENIA dedicated to research and development of Gen II and Gen III reactors is more than welcome, as, through continued EU research, it will support the safe operation of nuclear power plants which generate today one third of the electricity in Europe, therefore contributing to its security of energy supply.
