Lewis, Director, College Station, Texas, January 28, 1958 SALES, NCENTVE PAYMENTS AND PRCES FOR TEXAS WOOL, 1956 ~Ju~TNG YEAR R. L. Holland and L. P. Gabbard* The National Wool Act of 1954 provided for an incentive payment for wool mohair from April 1, 1955 to March 31, The incentive price is established each marketing year at such levels as the Secretary of Agriculture deems necesto encourage an annual production consistent with the declared policy of the The incentive level was established at 62 cents per pound for shorn wool for marketing years and The marketing year runs from April 1 of year through!larch 31 of ' the next year. The shorn wool percentage rate of payment for the 1956 marketing year was percent of the total gross proceeds received by the producer for his WOOl, marketing deductions. No payment was made on mohair since the national average received was in excess of the incentive level of 70 cents per pound. A deduction was made of 1 cent per pound, grease basis, from each pro's shorn wool payment and 5 cents per hundredweight of the market price for and yearlings sold for slaughter to develop and conduct advertising and sales programs on a national basis for wool, sheep and lambs, and the products According to the applications filed in the 1956 marketing year with the office of Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation in connection with the ve payment program, 237 Texas counties sold some wool under the program, as in the following county tabulations. Sales ranged from less than 100 to more 2,500,000 pounds per county. Sales in 15 counties were more than 1,000,000 each. Growers did not make applications under the program in 17 Texas Some 21,114 applications were filed in 1956, an average of nearly 89 per The number of applications ranged from 1 to more than 1,000 per county. average number of pounds per application was 2,120. Texas wool growers received more than $7,700,000 through the incentive program on shorn wool for the 1956 mar~eting year. The net sales on '''hich payments were made, gross sales minus marketing costs, amounted to,000. The two items totaled slightly more than $28,000,000. incentive payment program on unshorn lambs brought slightly more to Texas wool producers. Texas producers contributed almost $500,000 to the promotional program, sheep and lambs, and the products thereof. ively, cooperative agent, Market Research DiviSion, Agricultural Marketing, U. S. Department of Agriculture; and professor, Department of Agricultural ~'~~D and SOCiology, Texas Agricultural Experiment Station..
3 The average price received for wool in Texas in 1956 before incentive _.:nts was 45.6 cents per pound; the incentive payment pe.id averaged 17 cents per in 1956, making a total of 62.8 cents per pound. Prices during the 1955 "re1~ing year to Texas producers were 43.2 and 61.6 cents per pound, respectively. Wide variations in prices pa.id exist among Texas counties. n 1956, the average price, including incentive payments, was near 25.0 cents per pound the higbest near 75.0 cents per pound. No significant differences exist in and low county average prices between the 1955 and 1956 marketing years. These variations exist for several reasons. The most important is due Mfferences in shrinkage, but closely associated with it are the amount and type table matter present. The qual! ty of wool grown in different areas accounts some of the variation. The most important of the quality factors affecting are fineness and length of staple. Differences in price also are noted \-{hell are completed at different times of the year.
